About the Department:The Precision Sustainable Agriculture (PSA) program is a network of researchers across the country collaborating to develop integrated knowledge-intensive sustainable agriculture practices into a precision framework to maximize farm productivity, and sustainability through the use of an information ecology that connects farms, data, tools, and people for optimal, real-time decision making. The PSA program is housed within the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences which encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.
Essential Job Duties:This position will create a geo-spatial platform that links decision tools to in-field spatial variability. This full stack developer will build a geo-spatial platform for feeding data generated from satellites, tractor mounted camera systems, and other sources of spatial data into web-based decision tools and serve up maps of plant performance and management recommendations. With agriculture professional in mind create functionality for tools to enable print-friendly outputs that provide accurate technical assistance in the field. The project goal is to give farmers more accurate recommendations based on spatial variability of soils and topography.
a. Develop React applications from the ground up.
b. Design and implement the databases needed to store geo spatial data: combinations of tile, vector, and raster spatial data.
c. Design and implement REST APIs to interact with the new databases.
d. Present pros and cons of different solutions to our development team.
e. Construct or convert applications to be both desktop and mobile compatible.
g. Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s Degree and 1-2 years of experience or a Bachelor’s Degree and 3+ years ,or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.
- Experience with React applications.
- Experience w/architectural design of geo-spatial application from the ground up.
- Ability to work independently within a team environment.
- Excellent communications skills.
- Strong proficiency with React, PostgreSQL, a modern front end mapping software (such as: Mapbox, Leaflet), a modern API framework (Node.js/Express, Python/Django, Pathon/Flask, serverless functions), Git.
- 3 + years directly related experience.
- Strong proficiency with Bash/shell scripts, Linux, Azure services, MongoDB.
- Experience in a research setting.
