Academic Success Coach for Student Athletes

Job Description:

As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University is seeking an Academic Success Coach for Student Athletes who will promote Marian University’s mission and identity by serving as a member of the CASE (Center for Academic Success and Engagement) team and provides academic support to Marian University students, with focus on serving student-athletes. It is the responsibility of the Student Success Coach to organize, implement, facilitate, oversee and evaluate all aspects of academic support for student-athletes. The position works closely with the athletics department and provides insight for academic issues regarding student-athletes. This position also works collaboratively with many university offices and individuals, including: The Personalized Learning Center (services for students with disabilities), Counseling and Consultations Services, Academic Engagement, Health Services, faculty advisor, and coaches. Additionally, the position attends athletic departmental meetings and provides regular updates regarding the academic progress of student athletes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Serve as a case manager and academic coach for Marian University student-athletes. Monitoring academic progress and athletic eligibility status based on university satisfactory academic progress and NAIA standards.
  • Assist student-athletes on probation with academic recovery plans. Utilize a variety of techniques to holistically support student success related to academic skills, transition to college, utilizing resources, navigating the college process, learning strategies, and time management.
  • Plan and facilitate the JumpStart summer bridge program, focusing on academic skill building and success strategies for provisionally admitted students.
  • Connect student-athletes with academic on-campus resources including: Peer Tutoring, Writing Center, Speaking Studio, academic advising, Health Services, Personalized Learning Center, and Counseling & Consultation Services.
  • Communicate regularly with Athletic Director and head coaches regarding academic barriers and needs of student-athletes.
  • Oversee workshops and study tables for individual teams and student athletes.
  • Support Director of First-Year Experience with operations and logistics of New Student Orientation. Coordinate Student Athlete Convocation with members of the SSE team and Athletic Director.
  • Assess academic performance and outcomes for student-athlete based on the institutional learning outcomes and department goals.
  • Communicate issues of concern to the Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Engagement, Athletic Director, and University administration.
  • Keep accurate records of academic progress, sharing data and outcomes of student-athletes to key stakeholders on an on-going basis.
  • Serve as the Advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Facilitating monthly meetings to provide development and generate a voice for student-athletes at an institutional level.
  • Serve on other committees within Student Success and Engagement, including the Transformational Leadership Conference planning team.
  • Apply NAIA or conference rules as necessary when counseling student-athletes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, High Education, Student Affairs Counseling or Social Work preferred
  • Experience with advising and /or personal and academic coaching teaching advocacy career development and mentoring preferred.
  • Periodic evening and weekend responsibilities.
