Laboratory Technologist, Virology & Immunology Lab

Description: The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the position of Laboratory Technologist.  The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support in the Virology and Molecular Diagnostic Laboratories by learning and performing routine procedures on clinical specimens in the course of diagnostic testing or clinical research. Establishes the presence and identification of disease-causing agents or conditions. Assists with reporting data to clinicians and senior veterinary students. Must be willing to participate in rotating on-call schedule. Depending on qualifications of the successful candidate, position will begin as a Laboratory Technologist 1 or 2, or Senior Laboratory Technologist 1 or 2.  More responsibilities will be expected of those hired in at a more advanced level.



Qualifications

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Learns and performs basic routine testing procedures on various clinical specimens to establish the presence and identification of disease-causing agents or conditions.
  • Performs basic quality control, quality assurance procedures, and trouble shooting.
  • Assists with reporting data to veterinarians and senior veterinary students.
  • Adheres to all safety procedures as required by the University and the laboratory.
  •  Adheres to college and laboratory policies involving client confidentiality.
  • Documents problems with procedures and equipment with emphasis on laboratory quality assurance.
  •  Trains student employees and provides minor supervision.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of new laboratory procedures. 

Competencies:

  • Basic knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, or related science
  • Must have good communication skills
  •  Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Must be able to operate basic laboratory equipment or be willing to learn operation
  • Willing to learn complex assays and novel computer systems and equipment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or another laboratory science
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Additional relevant experience preferred.
