Responsibilities

Academic Advising:
    Provides advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and major requirements; assists students in determining major, alternative academic options, resolving scheduling conflicts, and similar issues.

Immigration Advising:
    Advise international students, campus staff, and faculty about procedures, policies, and regulations related to all types of nonimmigrant status that can be used by international students at the University. This information will be dispensed in person or electronically.

Financial Aid:
    Participates in the processing, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, and other awards; advises students on financial aid options. Assess students' financial ability to sustain their academic objectives. Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) to federal programs governing the support of international students. Analyze and interpret data for the production of visa documents for new students and continuing students as needed. Communicates with students on pre-arrival procedures.

Orientations and Events:
    Conducts orientations of new international students. Advises international students and their dependents on a variety of matters related to their stay at UC Berkeley. Coordinates and implements non-complex events that support the educational, cultural, and social needs of the students. Assists in the planning and implementation of complex events.

Career Counseling:
    Advises department/college/school students on employment preparation, timelines, and regulatory requirements. Organizes and presents workshops related to employment. Refers students to campus Career Center and other resources on campus.

Required Qualifications
    Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Basic knowledge of student immigration and visa processes pertaining to international students and scholars. Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn University processes and procedures. Understanding of and/or ability to learn University rules and regulations.

Education/Training:
    Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Training:
  • Master's degree in related field preferably in the area of student personnel administration and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $31.14 - $33.53.
    This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits. This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
