General Description

Under the direction of the Dean of Educational Support Services, the Instructional Assistant in the Educational Support Services department will perform complex technical work in a computer and/or instructional lab/tutorial environment supporting students, staff, and/or faculty.

This position is assigned to the Visalia campus, Full-Time, 10 Months.

Monday & Wednesday 12:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday & Thursday 1:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Initial placement is at $21.97

Job Duties

Job duties of the Instructional Assistant - Lab Setting include:
  • Assist with the maintenance of computer lab networks systems, trouble shoot computer problems; with direction update network software according to established procedures.
  • Assist students individually or in small groups, reinforcing or following-up on instructions.
  • Assist students in assignments related to the instructional program to which assigned; explain concepts, principles and terminologies to students.
  • Assist instructors, staff and students in the proper use of a variety of equipment (including computers), materials and supplies in an instructional lab setting.
  • Prepare equipment for student use.
  • Store supplies, materials and equipment; maintain inventories assuring adequate qualities are available for use.
  • Maintain lab area in a safe, clean and orderly condition; prepare and maintain records and reports as necessary.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

Any combination equivalent to:
  • High school graduation with college-level course work related to computers

  • and
  • One year of successful work experience dealing with people.

  • Desirable Qualifications:
  • College level work in any of the following: chemistry, biology, anatomy, accounting.

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office and classroom equipment.
  • Ability to hear and speak to communicate and exchange information and provide assistance to students.

  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for extended period of time.
  • Ability to reach in all directions and bend at the waist.
  • Ability to lift up to [heavy, moderately heavy, light] objects.

  • Knowledge and Abilities

    The hiring committee is seeking evidence of the following:

  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Basic knowledge of specific subject area in which assigned.
  • General needs and behavior of students of various ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds.
  • Record-keeping techniques.

  • Technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Operation of assigned instructional equipment.

  • Ability to:
  • Assist students in understanding and applying basic principles of the subject area to which assigned.
  • Advise students in the proper operation and use of assigned instructional equipment.
  • Explain work assignments to students.
  • Speak clearly and distinctly.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Plan and organize work.
  • Learn quickly to apply specific rules, policies and procedures of program to which assigned.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Type at an acceptable rate of speed.

    College of the Sequoias is a two-year California community college offering educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties. The college was established in 1925 and moved to its current 62-acre main campus site in Visalia in 1940.

    In addition to the campus in Visalia, COS operates a full-service center in Hanford that is also home to the college's police and fire academies.

    COS also opened its Tulare College Center in January 2013. It is a full-service college center and the home of COS' agriculture program
