Job Summary

The Campus Police Sergeant creates and maintains a safe and secure environment for community members to engage in pursuit of higher education, visitation of guests, and security of campus properties.

The Sergeant performs all duties of a sworn police officer while supervising assigned sworn and non-sworn subordinate staff in performance of a full range of public safety enforcement, security, and campus services. It is a designated position of trust.

Responsibilities
  • Promotes fair and equitable enforcement of applicable laws, policies, regulations, and institutional rules while maintaining the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the department and the institution; performs Public Safety duties while following best (police) practices and in compliance with state and federal laws, rules and regulations to include Clery, FERPA, HIPPA, Title IX, USG and GGC policies and Public Safety Accreditation Standards and Standard Operating Procedures; performs duties of a Campus Security Authority (CSA), as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act)
  • Functions in a leadership role (under limited supervision) performing a range of supervisory duties: participates in the selection process/hires employees, leads, or arranges orientation and training for employees in the unit, assigns work and work schedules, approves time records, coaches, evaluates and disciplines employees; oversees issuance and inventory of college issued clothing, gear, and equipment (including vehicles); monitors employee compliance with applicable laws, court rulings, policies, regulations and accreditation standards; inspects appearance, equipment and duty assignment; holds responsibility for the review, accuracy and approval of reports prepared by subordinates
  • Maintains confidentiality of contacts, conversations, statements, documents, recordings, reports, photographs, video recordings, printouts, radio communications, and all other forms of printed, digital, or computerized information
  • Prepares and presents patrol shift briefings; performs duties as Incident Commander for criminal or other large scale incidents; identifies and reports campus safety issues for risk assessment and maintenance review; coordinates the response of emergency rescue units and performs all associated duties; manages assigned staff and resources when called to support neighboring jurisdictions (Mutual Aid) in the enforcement of state laws or city ordinances; reviews documents, attends and testifies in city, state, superior, juvenile, and federal courts as well as the Grand Jury; participates in student integrity hearings
  • Performs limited duties normally associated with a lieutenant, or the duties of a patrolman, Campus Security Officer, or Communications Officer, or other function as deemed necessary; duties may vary by assignment to Division of Administration or Division of Operations, or other unit or program of Public Safety; responds to injured, or sick persons, or persons possibly in critical, life threatening circumstances; renders first aid, or other life-saving acts; directs traffic on campus property, or on a roadway using hands, traffic vests, and flashlights; moves and sets up barricades and traffic cones to form directional lanes for vehicular travel; pushes disabled vehicles from traffic accidents; maintains proficiency in the use of all police related equipment
  • Functions as a liaison with local, state, and federal first responder services and justice system authorities to provide information and training opportunities to improve joint responses to emergency and non-emergency events on campus, to assist with investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of criminal violators, to include presentation of pertinent information, observations, and suggestions to chain-of-command for analysis
  • Participates in the development of general, or complex operational plans, to provide guidance for daily activities, emergency or non-emergency responses, planned campus events, or implementing approved operational plans
  • Performs work as scheduled which may be day shift, evening shift or morning shift, and may include working weekends, holidays, and overtime; off-days may rotate, and there may be sudden changes to work assignments due to re-assignment to a specialized police unit or division, a campus or community emergency, a special event or other activities that may require 10 hour or 12 hour shifts
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • High School or GED
  • Four (4) years of experience as a GAPOST certified peace officer in good standing as defined by GAPOST or certification as a law enforcement officer by an agency other than GAPOST with a similar record and years of experience
  • Holds an unblemished record of prior termination, resignation in lieu of termination, investigation, suspension, probation, unpaid fees or delinquent training requirements
  • Meets qualifications for GAPOST Peace Officer Basic Mandate Academy admission
  • Completes GAPOST Peace Officer certification training or GAPOST Equivalency of Training within one (1) year of employment
  • Completes pre-employment criminal history check (no felony convictions, or domestic violence related convictions, or convictions of crimes of moral turpitude, or convictions of serious traffic offenses), background check, physical, drug test, physical agility test (if applicable), polygraph exam, psychological exam and credit history check
  • Possesses and maintains a valid, unrestricted, Georgia Driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently employed, or has been employed in the last 12 months, by a GAPOST recognized law enforcement agency
  • Three (3) years of college campus policing experience
  • One (1) year of experience as a First-Line Police Supervisor
  • Associate or higher college degree in criminal justice or related field of study

  • Completion of Clery Act Training Course for Police and Public Safety
  • Completion of Advanced CSA Training Course for Police and Public Safety
