Research Technologist
The Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Research Technologist who will join a team testing the function of CFTR, the protein dysfunctional in cystic fibrosis, and its response to precision medicine therapies. The Technologist will also have the opportunity to participate in gene editing studies using CRISPRI Cas9 methods. Under the supervision of a faculty investigator, the Technologist will be responsible for independently performing routine analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue or cultured cell lines. Work requires basic and advanced use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses understanding of theory behind experiments and applies analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes appropriate technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include: tissue culture, cell separation methods, electrophoretic separations, assays, basic and advanced molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques.
  • May utilize in vivo models in experiments.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Monitors verification of consents and participates in internal review board applications and renewals.
  • Extracting DNA and performing molecular tests such as genotyping and DNA sequencing.
  • Analyzing genotyping and sequencing results.
  • Database entry and review of clinical information and basic analysis of demographics and data integrity.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Basic understanding of molecular biology and genetics.
  • Requires the ability to safely operate scientific laboratory equipment.


Physical Requirements
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
  • Lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc.
  • Ability to move about workspace.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $15.00-$20.40-$25.50 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
