The San Diego Community College District is accepting applications for an Assistant Professor, Older Adult, 10-month assignment. The applicant must be qualified to teach in one of the following disciplines: Health and/or Brain Fitness. The current vacancy exists in Continuing Education and applicants should understand that they may be assigned to any Continuing Education campus. In addition, applications accepted for this position may be considered for identical vacancies that occur throughout Continuing Education for a period up to one year. Assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekend hours.
Major Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Dean, Emeritus Program, the 100% Continuing Education Instructor teaches 25 hours per week as assigned in accordance with the catalog descriptions and course outlines. The Older Adult (OA) Instructor is familiar with the learning styles of older students, has an awareness of community services for older adults, knowledge of current trends in the field of aging and an understanding of age-appropriate teaching methodologies. The assignment includes: evaluating student progress; establishing effective working relationships; participating in curriculum design; developing teaching materials; assisting in planning program activities; demonstrating excellent interpersonal and communication skills; serving on shared governance committees (e.g., screening, hiring, Academic Senate); participating in program review; using technology as it relates to teaching; and participating in professional development activities (e.g., staff development, peer-coaching). All Older Adults Instructor applicants shall show a strong commitment to teaching, program development and teamwork.

Applicants must show evidence of meeting the following minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with a major related to the subject of the course taught, and either: (A) Thirty hours or two semester units of course work or class work in understanding the needs of the older adult taken at an accredited institution of higher education or approved by the district. This requirement may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor; or (B) One year of professional experience working with older adults OR Associate degree with a major related to the subject of the course taught; and two years of occupational experience related to the subject of the course taught; and sixty hours or four semester units of coursework or classwork in understanding the needs of the older adult, taken at an accredited institution of higher education or approved by the district. This last requirement may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor.

Initial salary placement for this Adult Instructor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Adult Instructors earn tenure after 4 years.
