Description

Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking applicants for a full-time Medical Assisting (MA) Program Coordinator/Instructor at the Walla Walla campus. The start date is at the beginning of the Fall quarter in September 2023.

The program coordinator will be responsible for program effectiveness, including outcomes, organization, administration, continuous review, planning, and development of the MA program as well as other leadership functions with the nursing and allied health area.

General Description:

This position has both faculty and program administrative/accreditation responsibilities for the MA Program on the Walla Walla campus. In the faculty role, the relationship of the faculty member to the student is one of teacher, mentor, and facilitator of learning. Responsibilities include preparing teaching materials, teaching assigned classes, assessing learning, assigning grades and maintaining records.

As the MA Program Coordinator, this position is responsible for program effectiveness, including outcomes, organization, administration, continuous review, planning, and development in accordance with Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB) and Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) national accreditation standards. This faculty position reports to the Director of Allied Health & Safety Education.

Essential Functions:

Teaching and Assessment of Learning

  • Provide high quality instruction in assigned classes that is consistent with the MAERB Core Curriculum and college curriculum standards.
  • Foster a positive, caring, and equitable learning environment where diversity is respected, and advanced.
  • Assess student mastery of course, program, and college learning outcomes.

  • Integrate current computer technology in the classroom; offer instruction in multiple teaching formats (face-to-face, hybrid, online courses) as appropriate.
  • Participate in Professional Development activities that foster growth in best practices for teaching/learning and practice standards in industry.
  • Collaboratively Assess, Plan and Instruct with IBEST (Integrated Basic Skills Instructor) for student success.

  • Leadership and Program Administration

  • Provide general management of the MA Program that includes a long-term vision for the program consistent with college mission and values.
  • Ensure that all MAERB and CAAHEP accreditation standards and outcomes are regularly assessed and met.
  • Submit reports that detail program goal(s), learning domains, evaluation systems, outcomes, analysis, and appropriate action plans to the state approval and national accrediting bodies.
  • Maintain student records in sufficient detail to document learning progress and achievement, completion rates, and pass rates on a national MA certification exam.
  • Organize and hold regular meetings of a MA Advisory Committee who act collaboratively as consultants during curriculum design/implementation to ensure current industry relevance.
  • Serve as the lead faculty member for the MA Program
  • Assist in the hiring and evaluation of adjunct MA faculty and the MA Practicum Coordinator.
  • Provide oversight and direction to the MA Practicum Coordinator; assist with or oversee the orientation/mentoring of program adjuncts.
  • Represent the MA Program at department/division meetings and at college committee's meetings (Curriculum Committee, Outcomes Review Committee, etc.) as needed.
  • Understanding of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Knowledge of compliance related to credentialing and privileging healthcare providers.

  • Student Recruitment and Retention

  • Assist in the development and distribution of MA Program promotional materials.
  • Represent the MA Program at selected college outreach/student recruitment events.
  • Represent the MA Program at community events or on statewide inter-institutional initiatives.
  • Assist/advise/mentor MA students to promote student success.

    Minimum Qualifications (per CAAHEP and MAERB standards):
  • Associate degree
  • Credential in good standing as a certified medical assistant, by an organization whose credentialing current through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); Clinical Medical Assistant Certification Examination through the National Health Career Association (NHA); National Certified Medical Assistant Examination through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT); or Clinical Medical Assistant Certification Examination through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).
  • A minimum of three (3) years of employment in a healthcare facility, including a minimum of 160 hours in an ambulatory healthcare setting performing or observing administrative and clinical procedures as performed by medical assistants.

  • Desired Qualifications
  • Minimum of one (1) year of teaching experience in postsecondary and/or vocational/technical education.
  • Current and competent in the MAERB Core Curriculum objectives included in the assigned teaching.
  • Experience in teaching MA courses in multiple format (face-to-face, hybrid, and online).
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
  • Instruction in educational theory and technique.
  • Must be able to travel regionally.


  • Conditions/Terms of Employment
    WWCC is no longer required to collect COVID -19 vaccine information, however, some hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare institutions where WWCC Nursing/Medical Assisting faculty may conduct business in, may require the COVID-19 and other vaccinations.

    This is a full-time faculty position exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Faculty terms and conditions of employment are negotiated with their exclusive bargaining representative, the Association for Higher Education.     Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment and official college transcripts.     Compensation:

    The College has a negotiated faculty salary schedule. Employee placement on the schedule is determined by education level and experience. Salary is dependent on the number of days of the contract and the candidate's placement on the negotiated faculty salary schedule. Initial placement is generally $74,092.72 - 84,465.68 212-day contract, dependent on qualifications (additional compensation for doctorate degree). The College has a comprehensive faculty benefit program including medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance; paid sick leave; and retirement and two optional deferred compensation programs. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). The college also supports faculty professional development. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.
