Saint Michael's College
President

The Board of Trustees at Saint Michael's College, a residential, coeducational, Catholic, liberal arts college in Colchester, Vermont, announces a search for the 18th president of the College. Saint Michael's was founded in the Catholic intellectual tradition in 1904 by members of the Society of Saint Edmund, and it remains the only Edmundite college in the world.

Saint Michael's is located adjacent to Burlington, Vermont, and situated between Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains. The College enrolls approximately 1,200 undergraduates, 190 graduate students, and more than 50 international students, and it boasts 21 NCAA Division II varsity teams. Majors and minors are available in more than 40 fields of study across a broad spectrum of subjects, and the faculty are teacher-scholars.

Saint Michael's has long focused on how students, faculty, and staff can make an impact on the larger community – a direct connection to the College's foundational ethos of social justice and service. In 2022, Saint Michael's was named by the Princeton Review as one of the top 25 colleges engaged in community service. Saint Michael's has also been featured in the Princeton Review's Best 387 Colleges recognized as a Green College. Money magazine recognized Saint Michael's as one of the Top 50 Transformative Colleges, and Kiplinger's ranks Saint Michael's among the Best College Values.

The College community is eager to embrace a president who values what is unique about Saint Michael's, who understands the rapidly changing dynamic of higher education today, and who is willing and capable of galvanizing a campus community quickly around a compelling vision for the future and moving with urgency to bring that vision to life. Ideally, the 18th president of Saint Michael's College will bring a combination of the following qualities and attributes along with rich experience and a record of professional success in strengthening organizations:

• A person of faith with a deep respect and enthusiasm for the Catholic faith and intellectual tradition, the Edmundites and their focus on social justice and service, and for stewarding these fundamental elements of the College's identity.
• A visionary leader with high energy and passion for the mission of Saint Michael's, as well as an enthusiastic advocate for the College ready for active and deep engagement in the campus community, in the Burlington region, and beyond.
• A wise leader with financial acumen and the ability to allocate, steward, and grow resources – including enrollment, fundraising, and the diversification of revenue streams – in support of the mission of Saint Michael's College.
• A person with a deep commitment to all students and a passion as well as a record of success in the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion, given the Saint Michael's community's commitment to ensuring that all members of the college community feel a strong sense of belonging,
• A forward-thinking leader who will explore and embrace new technologies and innovative teaching and business models that will enhance and expand academic programs, improve the student experience, and strengthen enrollment and institutional advancement results.
• An accomplished, dynamic, and resilient leader with successful executive experience; the ability to proactively facilitate, manage, implement, and drive change; a track record of hiring, inspiring, managing, motivating, and retaining a strong team; and a demonstrated capacity for leadership in a complex and rapidly evolving environment.
• A gifted leader with superb interpersonal skills, high emotional intelligence, excellent communication and storytelling abilities, a transparent leadership style, a great sense of humor, and a zest for life.
• A person of integrity and authenticity who has the courage to lead collaboratively, boldly, creatively, imaginatively, and with urgency in combination with the ability to inspire, build trust and confidence in others, and make and carry out tough decisions.

Organization

The happiest college on earth.

Across campus, you’ll find bright, engaged, friendly, happy students and faculty. Our formula for happiness? A close campus community, a perspective changing exploration of the liberal arts, a legacy of service and a stunning location.

At Saint Michael’s College, our students learn what matters: they learn about the environment, the global community, new media, psychology, international business, world religions, and politics. And they learn how to live in a warm, caring community that values independence and diversity as well as close, caring relationships. All this while being right next to the awesome Green Mountains and Burlington, one of America’s greatest college towns.

An Education for Life
We offer 29 majors - each grounded in our liberal studies core. What does that mean? It means that students are going to learn a whole lot about the world, past, present and future. They’ll learn things they’ll need four years from now, and things they’ll recall 20 years from now. They’ll learn to read, write, solve problems, and think for themselves, while not forgetting about others.

Every course is taught by a professor, not a graduate assistant. Our student-faculty ratio is just 12:1, and that means students get personal attention in class and out of class. Our professors challenge their students, but are known for helping them to reach those challenges too.

In Service to the World
Service to the community and to all humankind is a vibrant part of student life, reflecting the heritage of service of the Edmundite priests who founded Saint Michael’s. More than 70% of Saint Mike’s students join in service projects through Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts (MOVE), reflecting a unique passion for social justice issues on campus. And students can find spiritual engagement through the extensive programming offered by the Office of Edmundite Campus Ministry.

An Unsurpassed Vermont Location
Situated just outside of Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, the area attracts 14,000 students enrolled in five local colleges and universities. In addition to the shops, restaurants and cafes of the Church Street Marketplace and a lively local music scene, Burlington offers great opportunities for hands-on learning through internships. Vermont, known for its natural beauty, environmentalism and year-round recreational activities, inspires many students to take advantage of some of the best skiing in the East.
