Search for the Vice President for Administration and Finance
Mount Saint Mary's University
Los Angeles, CA

As the only Catholic liberal arts university primarily for women in the Western United States, Mount Saint Mary's University (the Mount) seeks an innovative and collaborative leader to serve as its next Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF). As the university approaches its centennial in 2025, the VPAF will play a vital role in ensuring the university is both poised to fulfill its current strategic plan while creatively setting a new and innovative path forward to ensure robust and sustainable financial footing well into the future. Reporting to the President, Dr. Ann McElaney-Johnson, and serving as a key member of her highly collaborative President's Cabinet, the VPAF will thoughtfully steward the institution's financial and operational infrastructure in alignment with the mission and values of the university.

Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1925, the Mount is known nationally for its research on gender equity, its innovative health and science programs, and its commitment to community service and global justice. The Mount is a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution in the heart of Los Angeles and is one of the most diverse universities in the nation. It provides year-round, flexible, and online programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. Their degree programs for busy adults, the Weekend/Evening & Online College, and their graduate programs are offered to all genders. The Mount serves approximately 2,440 students, including 643 graduate students. The Chalon Campus houses the majority of traditionally-aged undergraduate students, while just 16 miles away near downtown Los Angeles, the Doheny Campus is home to additional academic offerings, including graduate education. The Chalon campus is in the Brentwood neighborhood overlooking the Santa Monica Mountains and Pacific Ocean; the Doheny campus is centrally located to all that downtown Los Angeles has to offer.

It is a pivotal time for the VPAF to join the Mount's highly aspirational leadership team, most of which are new to the university in the last few years, as they embark on new initiatives to improve student retention, grow enrollment, and brainstorm new opportunities for revenue to fulfill strategic goals. The Mount is engaging multiple consultants to help frame their strategy moving forward, and the VPAF will have the opportunity to work closely with Cabinet to create and implement action plans. The VPAF will be joining a close-knit university community committed to the recruitment, retention, and success of its diverse and talented faculty, staff, and students who are leaders, learners, and advocates for a just society.

The VPAF will be expected to address the following key opportunities and challenges:

• Develop and implement strategic and innovative financial and operational planning that aligns with the overall strategic goals of the university;
• Augment revenue-generating opportunities, in close collaboration with university leadership, in support of the university's mission;
• Provide thoughtful leadership to the Administration and Finance team in support of their development and to ensure their overall cohesion
• Serve as a visible, approachable, and highly collaborative strategic leader to the university community

Mount Saint Mary's University is an independent, Catholic, liberal arts college which provides a values-based undergraduate education for women, as well as innovative programs for professional men and women on two historic campuses in Los Angeles. The Mount is the only Catholic college primarily for women in the Western United States. It is also nationally recognized for its academic programs, its culturally diverse student body, and its focus on preparing the next generation of citizen leaders.

MSMU_Doheny2Founded in 1925 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the College had its original campus at St. Mary’s Academy at Slauson and Crenshaw Boulevards in downtown LA. After the purchase of property in the Santa Monica Mountains in 1928, the University built its Chalon Campus, which is home to its traditional baccalaureate degree program.

The University’s historic Doheny Campus near downtown LA opened in 1962 on what was once the Doheny Family estate. The campus houses the Mount’s graduate degree programs, associate in arts program, education credential program, and the Weekend College, which offers a baccalaureate degree program to working adults. Many of the other programs at the Doheny Campus are also offered in evening and weekend formats.

The Mount’s academic programs place a strong emphasis on social and ethical values consistent with the Catholic view of compassionate community involvement—both in Southern California and around the world.MSMU_Students2

The University also prides itself on the diversity of its student body and faculty, which includes a wide variety of religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Indeed, this diversity greatly enhances students’ preparation for involvement and leadership in our increasingly complex world.

Since its inception, Mount Saint Mary’s University has granted more than 17,000 degrees.
