Job Summary:

Nature of Work

The Proenza Lab and the Tsai Lab in the Department of Physiology & Biophysics are seeking a Research Assistant Professor, for new, independent projects respective to the research interests of each lab.

For the Proenza Lab, the position would research the control of rhythmic breathing in the preBotzinger complex. Initially, the focus will be to acquire new research data, and submit for grant funding. Prior to earning independent funding, this position will continue to carry out experiments funded by grants in the Proenza lab. Additional duties include writing manuscripts, presenting data in meetings, disseminating scientific findings, and preparing grant proposals. This position reports directly to Dr. Catherine Proenza in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics.

For the Tsai Lab, the position will primarily lead technicians to investigate the mechanisms of signal transduction in the hearing system. Additional duties include writing manuscripts, presenting data in meetings, disseminating scientific findings, and preparing grant proposals. This position directly reports to Dr. Ming-Feng Tsai.

Supervision Received

This position will report to Dr. Catherine Proenza or Dr. Ming-Feng Tsai.

  • Writing sponsored project proposals for independent funding
  • Presenting research findings at local, national, or international level
  • Software development to support experiments
  • Patch clamp electrophysiology with mechanical stimulation and high-speed video recording
  • Equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting

    Qualifications:

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.


  • PhD in biomedical physiology or closely related field, or a Doctor of Medicine
  • Five years' experience in biological wet research

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in electrophysiology
  • Matlab, python, or other programming experience
  • Documented experience working in the area of the preBotzinger complex or the mechanisms of signal transduction in the hearing system

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong multitasking and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and effectively adapt to a varied and shifting workload.

    Anticipated Pay Range:

    The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

    $75,464 - $80,000.

    The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
