Executive Director, Knight-Georgetown Institute - Georgetown University

Executive Director, Knight-Georgetown Institute - Georgetown University

The non-partisan Knight-Georgetown Institute (KGI) is a centerpiece of Georgetown University's work at the intersection of technology, research, and policy and a culmination of the Knight Foundation's sustained investment in research in media and democracy. The Institute will serve as a convening and translational hub for the growing field of research and collaboration across social science, data science, computer science, humanities, journalism, public policy, and law in order to inform technology and media policy, law, design, and practice in the public interest.

Job Overview

The Executive Director is a senior professional with extensive prior experience and expertise in the growing field of information, technology and policy. The ideal candidate is passionate about building programs and executing on big ideas and is comfortable in policy, research, non-profit and tech industry environments and can facilitate substantive discussions that lead to better informed outcomes. They are primarily charged with building a team to support the convening and growth of the field of information, technology and policy and translate the work of the field to broader audiences.

They also manage and execute large work streams, projects, and events for the institute and facilitate communication across stakeholders; and build the Institute's senior leadership team. They necessarily have the capacity to build from the ground up and the flexibility to revise plans as needs change; and assist in advancement efforts and represent the Institute at conferences and meetings.

The Executive Director reports to the Provost, but has the capability, responsibility, and authority to manage and coordinate all aspects of the Institute's work.; and coordinate with internal staff to bring the Institute's programs to targeted audiences, and to build communities around areas of focus to move from ideas to implementation.

Work Interactions

The Executive Director is responsible for cooperating with senior University leadership, including the Provost and the Institute Research Director, the Knight Foundation and its network, high-level government officials, business leaders, and academic and civil society organizations as necessary to advance the Institute's purpose as a translational and research hub for the field.

They fulfill critical operational and managerial needs necessary to facilitate the development and functioning of the Institute and its programming; and have primary day-to-day responsibility for all aspects of Institute operations and activities related to establishing a strategy, direction, and goals for the Institute and ultimately the administration of events, programs, policies and procedures. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Oversee the execution of the institute's pillars of work
  • Hire, manage, and develop staff
  • Manage the institute's budget
  • Represent the institute publicly
  • Host convenings
  • Develop and execute fundraising strategy
  • Serve as key communication point person with Knight Foundation, the Knight Research Network with external field partners


Requirements and Qualifications
  • JD or a Master's degree in social science, data science, computer science, law or related field
  • At least 10 years of executive experience
  • Proven track record in the field of media, technology and democracy
  • Knowledge of or experience in information and technology policy
  • Ability to engage diverse stakeholders across disciplines and viewpoints
  • Experience building teams, programs and/or organizations
  • Understanding of budgeting, financial management and forecasting
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and complexity
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Media training


Preferred Requirements and Qualifications
  • A terminal degree and a record of success in research
  • Experience in public interest organizations, think tanks, research organizations, or the technology industry
  • Experience leading interdisciplinary teams
  • Nonprofit financial management, sustainability and compliance
  • Experience building relationships with funders
