Position Summary:
The Executive Director of Employee and Client Engagement is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive internal communications strategy that effectively engages and inspires employees across Johns Hopkins Medicine. This is a senior-level role that is responsible for oversight of all internal communications across all Johns Hopkins Medicine entities and functions.

The Executive Director of Employee and Client Engagement reports to the Chief Communications Officer. This role will work closely with the Johns Hopkins Medicine leadership team to prioritize institutional messages and initiatives and will serve as a strategic advisor on all internal communications matters. This role is supported by directors and managers who are responsible for running the internal communications for the Baltimore based Johns Hopkins Medicine Internal Communications team as well as each Johns Hopkins Medicine hospital and business unit.

This role will have oversight of internal communications efforts occurring at each Johns Hopkins Health System hospital and will be responsible for elevating and addressing issues that emerge within each hospital with the potential to impact the reputation of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

This role works closely with its peers in external communications, in particular the Executive Director of Issues and External Communications, to ensure that any initiatives or incidents with the potential to impact the reputation of Johns Hopkins Medicine are being appropriately addressed with internal audiences as well as external stakeholders.

Reports to Vice President of Communications and Chief Communications Officer / JHM
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive internal communications strategy that aligns with the overarching mission, vision and values of Johns Hopkins Medicine as well as the organization's strategic goals.
  • Act as a strategic advisor on internal communications matters, including but not limited to employee engagement, change management, and crisis communications.
  • Work with Johns Hopkins Medicine department and functional leaders to identify and address specific internal communications needs.
  • Ensure that all internal communications are aligned with Johns Hopkins Medicine's brand and messaging guidelines.
  • Leverage quantitative and qualitative data to understand the current state of employee engagement and satisfaction and design a long-term plan that addresses issue areas and seizes opportunities to enhance employee engagement and trust.
  • Work with internal communications team members to design multi-channel approaches to employee engagement across the institution and all entities, including the use of an internal communications social media platform and app, intranet, email newsletters, videos and town meetings.
  • Establish and maintain metrics for team success and relay the team's progress to the Chief Communications Officer and other members of the Johns Hopkins Medicine leadership team.
  • Along with the Executive Director of Issues and External Communications, oversee a team of seven hospital communications leaders who are responsible for internal and external communications at each location. This role will also directly oversee a director of internal communications for the institution. This includes the supervision and mentoring of members of the internal communications team, including setting performance goals, and providing ongoing feedback and support.
    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, change management, or a related field. Masters preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in communications, with at least 10 years of experience in internal communications or change management, preferably in a health care or large organization setting.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages that are clear, concise, and easy to understand.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including expertise in presentations, team facilitations, and ability to provide constructive feedback.
  • Strong judgement, willingness to navigate ambiguity and a drive to seek continuous improvement.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop long-term plans for employee engagement that align with the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines and handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other communication tools such as email marketing platforms and social media management tools.
