The purpose of this position is to provide machine shop-related services on a regular schedule to be arranged by mutual agreement. Services may include operating lathes, milling machines, drill presses, surface grinders, hydraulic presses, gas and electric welders and various other hand and power tools and other relevant technical assistance as necessary in support of the Department’s mission. The maintenance mechanic will provide machine shop-related services and other relevant technical assistance to a) faculty and students in building and/or maintaining research-related equipment, b) faculty and lab manager to maintain and/or build equipment needed for teaching laboratories, c) faculty in their service activities, and d) faculty and staff in their outreach activities and in activities related to promotion of the Department and recruitment. The maintenance mechanic is required to maintain the machine shop equipment and tools in working order, keep machine shop area clean and safe, and purchase appropriate equipment, tools, and consumables as necessary and as allowed by the available budget.

• Operate and maintain the Physics and Astrophysics Department's machine shop
  • To be responsible for the equipment in the shop
  • To clean, maintain, and ensure safety of machine shop area and other relevant areas in the building
  • To keep workshop-related materials in stock for departmental use
  • To assist in the acquisition of new or used equipment and tooling as well as shop supplies
  • To schedule the work order to be done
  • To assist students and faculty using machine shop tools and equipment
• To build and modify research equipment
  • To confer with both faculty and student about the design and planning of the equipment
  • To be able to understand instructions either by oral, written, sketches, or blue prints
  • To do the machining, welding, or woodwork necessary to complete the project
• To build and/or repair laboratory equipment used by the students and faculty in teaching laboratories and student projects
  • Assist Department’s Teaching Laboratory Manager when machine shop services are needed to repair broken or worn out teaching laboratory equipment
  • To provide machine shop-related services required to build demonstration equipment to be used in teaching, promotional, and outreach activities
  • To provide any machine shop-related services required to repair broken or worn out scientific equipment
  • In some cases to build equipment which be used in student projects
• Other Duties as Assigned, including:
  • Provide mechanical/machine shop services to Department’s day-to-day operations as requested by the Chair or designee
  • Assist faculty, staff, and students with Department’s promotional and outreach activities as requested by the Chair or designee
  • To supply liquid nitrogen to the Department

• High school diploma or GED
• Relevant vocational training or equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency in operating lathes, milling machines, drill presses, surface grinders, hydraulic presses, gas and electric welders and various other hand and power tools
• Two years of related work experience
• Knowledge of UND policies and procedures
