The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Earth and Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geology, Geography, and Meteorology. At the graduate level, the Department offers an M.S. in Earth Sciences, an M.A. in Geography, a Ph.D. in Geography and participates in two interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs: Infrastructure and Environmental Systems and Public Policy.

The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is an interdisciplinary community of physical and social scientists with more than 30 faculty members, 400 undergraduate students, and 100 graduate students, and is housed within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. As the largest college at UNC Charlotte, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences comprises 20 departments in the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and military sciences, as well as 24 applied research centers and interdisciplinary programs. It offers eight doctoral degrees, 34 master’s degrees and graduate certificates and 34 undergraduate degrees.

Description of Work:

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is recruiting a one year, full-time, non-tenure track Lecturer with expertise broadly related to geology, earth and environmental sciences, meteorology, or physical geography. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching and community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

The successful candidate will play an important role in the Earth Sciences component of our undergraduate programs and general education offerings. The successful candidate is expected to teach sections of Introductory Physical Geography (ESCI 1101), Geology (1200), or Meteorology (1102) as well as courses that contribute to the Department’s undergraduate degree programs. Potential contributions to upper-level courses are also welcome.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

Required minimum qualifications are: 1) a Master’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, Meteorology, or a related discipline by the time of appointment; 2) the ability to contribute to undergraduate curricula consistent with departmental needs; and 3) the ability to contribute to the Department’s interdisciplinary teaching mission.

The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences (https://geoearth.charlotte.edu/) is a diverse community of geospatial, social and physical scientists composed of over 30 faculty members, over 400 undergraduate majors, and 80+ graduate students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds. The Department’s mission is to create, extend and disseminate applied and theoretical scientific knowledge of the Earth’s physical, natural and human systems and their interactions through scholarly research, teaching and service. The Department is committed to rigorous high-level research and excellence in teaching. It is home to the Center for Applied Geographic Information Science (gis.charlotte.edu) and the Charlotte Action Research Project (charp.charlotte.edu). The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Geography (BA/BS), Earth and Environmental Sciences (BS), Geology (BS), Environmental Studies (BA), and Meteorology (BS). At the graduate level, the Department offers a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Science & Technology, an MS in Earth Sciences and an MA and PhD in Geography. Departmental faculty have the opportunity to be affiliated with the School of Data Science, which offers a BS degree in Data Science and two MS degrees in Data Science & Business Analytics and Health Informatics & Analytics. In addition, the department is a core participant in several interdisciplinary graduate programs on campus, including Ph.D. programs in Public Policy (PPOL), Infrastructure and Environmental Systems (INES), and the Master’s in Urban Design (MUD).UNC Charlotte is a rapidly growing doctoral-granting urban university located in the largest metropolitan area between Washington DC, and Atlanta.
