Job Description:

Southern Utah Museum of Art, on the campus of Southern Utah University, features the artwork of regional artists known for their landscapes, faculty and student artists from the SUU Department of Art & Design, as well as emerging and distinguished artists from around the country. Strengths of the nearly 2,000-object permanent collection include the body of work by Jimmie F. Jones that exemplifies his notable career in the region, as well as a robust collection of prints featuring well-known artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Salvador Dal, Katsushika Hokusai, Thomas Hart Benton, and others. Since 2019, a number of gifts and acquisitions have focused on photography such as Brett Weston, Gary Edward Adams, and a portfolio called DE | MARCATION: A Survey of Contemporary Photography in Utah. Named the best-designed museum in Utah by Architectural Digest, SUMA's building was designed by Brooks + Scarpa and inspired by the region's famed slot canyons.

Under the direction of the Manager of Marketing/Creative Director, the Lead Graphic Designer at Southern Utah Museum of Art will lead design efforts related to exhibitions, programs, publications, and branding. With the assistance of the Manager of Marketing/Creative Director, this position will supervise the Graphic Design Assistant, an undergraduate student, providing clear direction and feedback to create visual consistency for museum design projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Marketing & Design:
  1. Develop exhibition and program identities, preparing design assets to be applied by other team members.
  2. Provide feedback and direction on projects to undergraduate students.
  3. With the assistance of the Manager of Marketing/Creative Director, manage design project timelines and ensure deadlines are met.
  4. Create internal and external designs for exhibitions, programs, and general museum needs (wall graphics, signage, billboards, magazine ads, etc.).
  5. Design multi-paged publications including learning guides, catalogs, booklets, and brochures.
  6. Ensure all important information is included and displayed effectively, in an aesthetically pleasing manner, and meets museum branding guidelines.

Administration:
  1. Supervise a student graphic designer, interns, and serve as liaison for freelance designers in conjunction with the Manager of Marketing/Creative Director.
  2. Attend weekly team meetings, biweekly staff meetings, and occasional project meetings (1-4 hours per week)
  3. Participate in select Task Forces for SUMA such as Art Auction and Day of the Dead.
  4. Contribute to a supportive, collaborative, positive, and healthy work environment based on respect, relationship building, and setting clear and reasonable expectations.
  5. Work with the Manager of Marketing/Creative Director for onboarding and training, setting performance standards, and providing timely, constructive feedback in addition to regular performance reviews.
  6. Assist with the organization of the team's Google Drive, SharePoint, and necessary documents.


Education and Experience Requirements:
  1. Bachelor's degree in graphic design or Bachelor's degree in marketing, communication, or related field with demonstrated design experience.
  2. 1-2 years of experience designing in-house or freelance.
  3. Strong experience in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  4. Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  5. Supervisor/management experience preferred.
  6. Experience in branding and publication design preferred.
