Senior Associate Vice President, University Capital Giving

Job Profile Title

Senior Associate Vice President, Development and Alumni Relations

Job Description Summary

University of Pennsylvania (Penn) seeks a collaborative, entrepreneurial, and proven leader to serve in the inaugural role of Senior Associate Vice President, University Capital Giving (SAVP/CG). Few universities in the country raise more in charitable contributions than Penn, and its development and alumni relations (DAR) professionals are highly regarded by the University’s internal and external stakeholders and among its peers. As the institution welcomes new leadership and experiences unprecedented fiscal health and levels of volunteer support, there is significant untapped philanthropic potential within Penn’s constituency.

As one of three central development SAVPs reporting to the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations (VP), the SAVP/CG will lead an integrated team of fundraising units focused on top of pyramid prospect management and strategy, including principal and major gifts, international and parent fundraising, and gift planning. As the first incumbent in a newly developed role, the SAVP/UCG will elevate the work of DAR to achieve even greater fundraising results through collaborative, cross-disciplinary, and strategic prospect, and portfolio management. A particular focus of this role will be $1million+ giving across the University, including prospect assignment protocols and fundraiser training, evaluation, and coaching initiatives.

As a thought partner to the VP and in collaboration with management team colleagues, the SAVP/UCG will play a vital role in the development of the University’s next campaign. The successful incumbent will serve Penn as a leader of consequence both within the Development division and across the University, setting a standard for performance that reflects Penn’s values and those of the advancement profession.

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with exceptional judgment who is drawn to the academic and societal mission of the University of Pennsylvania. This is an outstanding opportunity to experience creating meaningful and productive partnerships in complex environments with ambitious and aspirational goals. Penn’s next SAVP/UCG will bring a successful track record leading teams that represent best practice models, a desire to contribute to a culture committed to the highest standards for performance and professional growth, and a passion for developing talent and camaraderie.

Job Description

Serving as a core member of the organization’s senior management team, the SAVP/UCG will lead those units primarily focused on top-of-pyramid fundraising while proposing and implementing strategies that accelerate fundraising growth across the University as the University enters a new phase of fundraising growth and prepares for its next campaign. Specific units within the SAVP/UCG’s purview include principal gifts, major gifts, parent fundraising, international fundraising, and gift planning.

Opportunities and Expectations:

  • Foster a team-oriented culture focused on sustainable and significant performance growth for each of the portfolio fundraising units. In this capacity, the SAVP/UCG provides leadership, guidance, and mentorship to unit leaders, ensuring that they are performing at the highest levels while supporting them in their professional development.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and program development for central DAR and partner with colleagues and volunteer leaders in the development of the next capital campaign.
  • Set a clear strategic course. Establish priorities for the portfolio fundraising units, ensuring that managers are focused on those strategies and tactics that are essential to each unit’s performance against clearly articulated goals.
  • Work collaboratively with the development team to continue to build a robust pipeline of major to principal gifts that will sustain the University’s fundraising success in the long term. Track progress against goals and redirect staffing and prospect assignments as necessary to maximize potential giving opportunities.
  • Benchmark unit performance against a cohort of best-in-class peers. Judiciously and deliberately draw on data to measure progress and performance, deploying metrics as a tool to provide both information and insight.
  • Ensure that we are successfully advancing relationships with those with the greatest philanthropic ability as Penn seeks to accelerate the level and pace of transformational gifts to the University.
  • Maintain a small portfolio of high-level donors and prospective donors based mostly in Philadelphia and New York.

**Please provide a resume and cover letter in order to be considered for this role. Please upload all documents in the “Resume/CV” section of the application prior to submitting.**

  • Knowledge of and experience with using data to drive fundraising strategy; ability to shift priorities in response to results and trends; and highly skilled in the areas of planning, critical thinking, and analysis.
  • Proven track record of success in personally developing relationships between philanthropists and an institution over time.
  • The capacity to contribute to all aspects of Penn’s success and strategic priorities, the ability to engage staff and constituents in a dialogue about the role the University plays in the world and the work of any of its schools and centers, and a desire to apply their unique gifts and talents to the University’s academic and societal mission.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, a healthy sense of humor, and a supportive and accessible management style. The ability to lead and motivate a diverse staff, and experience managing change and growth.
  • An ability to develop professionals by providing clear and direct feedback in a manner that is motivated by a desire to help individuals grow while advancing the overarching goals of the organization and the needs of the team.
