The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has a proud and rich combination of academic activities and service contributions. Since its founding in 1889, the Department has systematically built clinical, research, and educational programs that have become deeply integrated into the fabric of Penn Medicine, the University, and the community. Penn Orthopaedics is a top funded program by the National Institutes of Health and continues to be a pioneer in the field of orthopaedics with a vision to define world class musculoskeletal care through impactful research, innovative education and leading orthopaedic practice. In addition to excellence in its tripartite mission, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is committed to fostering a culture of diversity and mentorship, developing cross-departmental and cross-institutional collaborations for innovative research and individualized care, and building partnerships with the Philadelphia community to address local health needs, as well as around the world through service initiatives.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is housed in Penn Medicine University City at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. The department is closely aligned with the Penn Nerve Center, Penn Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders, Penn Spine Center, and has collaborative relationships with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, in addition to key partnerships with the departments of Anesthesia, Family Medicine, Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Plastic Surgery, Radiology and Rheumatology and an evolving relationship with Penn Athletics.

The Chair of the Department directs over 65 faculty members, with over 20 based at CHOP, and 325 professional and support staff. The practice has over 110,000 outpatient visits a year, with over 27,000 annual new visits and nearly 86,000 active patients. In FY 2022, the department cared for nearly 5,000 inpatients. Major hospital sites for clinical and educational activities include Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Chester County Hospital, the Crescenz VA Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, institutions of great distinction and diversity. The Department is a member of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) and the Chair serves as a member of the Board of Directors of CPUP whose primary role is to coordinate the tripartite mission of Penn Medicine’s 18 clinical departments.

Qualified candidates hold MD or MD/PhD degrees and qualify for faculty appointment as Associate Professor or Professor rank in the Standing Faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) at the University of Pennsylvania. Candidates must be a respected active clinician with a distinguished national/international record of research and possess dynamic, inclusive leadership and a strong interest in clinical operations and administrative expertise. Candidates must have a clear commitment to – and excellence in – education, fostering an inclusive environment, and sponsorship and mentorship of a diverse cadre of students, residents, fellows and faculty. Candidates must have the demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations among investigators within the Department, the PSOM, the campus community, and Philadelphia. The candidate must articulate a compelling vision for the future of Orthopaedic Surgery at Penn Medicine, the role of the department within a highly regarded academic medical center and the field of orthopaedic surgery in general.
