The Student Needs & Outreach Coordinator has direct oversight for planning, coordinating, implementing, and assessing of campus-wide, government and/or community organizational programs and services designed to identify and meet the needs of under-resourced and high needs students. Program development is designed to promote student success, retention, and completion by removing barriers to their education and developing support and referrals to meet student needs.

Responsibilities include economic crisis intervention, student advocacy, mandated reporting, and informational and referral coordination on and off campus wellness resources. The individual in this position is responsible for education and outreach to students, faculty and staff, and community partners. The Coordinator develops and maintains relationships with campus and community partners in an effort to provide comprehensive and cohesive services, information, and programs to CSM students. Additionally, the individual in this position serves as a liaison between Hawk Pantries (all campus locations) and college departments.

The work schedule for this position is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Flexibility is required as this position will rotate across campuses and may support some weekend programming. This is a not remote or telework position. The Coordinator reports to the division VP for Student Equity and Success.

This position is open until filled. The College of Southern Maryland is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesEssential Functions:

  • Collaborates with CSM employees and students, and community organizations and government offices of all three counties to build a network of supports to assist under-resourced students.
  • Develop, maintain, and evaluate food pantry services at all campus locations. Oversee the daily operations of the food pantries and serve as point of contact for Maryland Food Bank partnership and/or other community resource partnerships.
  • Provide direct oversight and fiscal management of the program budget, related grants and/or CSM Foundation sponsorships and make recommendations regarding allocation of resources and expenditure of funds.
  • Plans, coordinates, implements and assess campus-wide programs and services designed to identify and meet the needs of under-resourced and high needs students. Develop and implement education initiatives and outreach to students, staff, and community members. Participate in related department functions, such as community and program education.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with the community and campus partners. Provide comprehensive and cohesive services, information, and programs to all CSM students for basic needs security. Research external funding opportunities to support emergency support services and basic needs programming.
  • Expand wrap-around basic needs supports by connecting existing disparate student services (including transportation, childcare, emergency aid, benefits screening, and food assistance, etc.); planning and leading cross-training; and supporting interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Maintain event calendar including descriptions of events and activities as well as promotions of these on social media.
  • Collaborate with Academic Advising, Financial Assistance, Student Life, and other student support services to provide comprehensive services to students.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and train part-time student staff, federal work-study students and volunteers to work in the campus food pantries and/or assist with additional administrative tasks as needed or assigned.
  • Provide support to the VP Student Equity and Success as needed? assist with implementation of college-wide engagement events and activities--must be available on nights and weekends as needed.
  • Serve as member of divisional and college-wide committees as requested.
  • Facilitate life skills and other basic needs related workshops.
  • Establish and maintain student/client confidentiality using FERPA.
  • Write, post and maintain timely updates to the Basic Needs and resources webpages.
  • Oversee the Career Closet and develop enhancements to the plan which solicits and distributes clothing items to students in need.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • Two years of experience preferred in a non-profit, government or higher education setting with progressively greater responsibility. Experience includes internships and volunteer work. Strong candidates will have experience working with community college students in student services, student affairs or student development capacities or in a social work, counseling or case management roles. Minimum Qualifications and Standards RequiredKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Requires strong knowledge and experience in areas of student advocacy, food and housing insecurity, community support resources and economic emergency management.
  • Excellent relationship building skills.
  • Ability to work well and interact effectively and plan programs with diverse populations, including traditional and non-traditional students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with college student constituencies & diverse populations in an effective manner.
  • Mission driven approach supporting students.
  • Excellent creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to network with government agencies and personnel to identify and locate current resources.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment of the value of student engagement and the impact of basic needs in the life of students apart of a comprehensive community college.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to make group presentations.
  • Must be highly Organized and a multi-taker.
  • Project management skills and familiarity with program evaluation and assessment.
  • Ability to maintain all required Maryland Food Bank food safety licensing/trainings at designated intervals.
  • Ability to maintain insurability under the college’s vehicle liability insurance plan.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Maryland driver’s license and a safe driving record to drive a college or personal vehicle.
    Physical Requirements:

    The work requires some lifting of between 25 – 40 pounds for food pantry/storage/Career Closet activities.
