Description

Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Focus: Nuclear Multiphysics

DESCRIPTION: This position involves computational research on nuclear reactor safety and nuclear fuel safety. This includes accident tolerant fuel behavior, including critical heat flux. Nuclear system code modeling experience, e.g. with RELAP, TRACE, or equivalent, and fuel performance code modeling experience, e.g. with BISON, or equivalent, is required. Expertise in water-cooled, gas-cooled, and molten salt-cooled systems is desirable. The demonstrated ability to couple modeling and experiment results is preferred. The position requires experience with thermal hydraulics, neutronics, and materials research. Additional duties include technical interactions with graduate students, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Idaho National Laboratory research staff members, contributing to and developing new research initiatives, writing peer reviewed scientific journal articles, and fiscal and technical management of research projects. The appointment would be a limited term appointment, approximately 1 year with the possibility of renewal for future years. The end goal after the appointment would be for you to secure a permanent position that is compatible with your interest: a faculty position or a research scientist position at a government lab. The objective will be to also assist managing ongoing funded projects and to work with a mentor to prepare research proposals that are competitive for U.S. federal funding agencies to generate new projects.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: Position requires a Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering or an equivalent field. The successful applicant will be a new PhD graduate, demonstrated experience with computational modeling of thermal hydraulics, fuel performance, and sensitivity analysis, and a publication record of peer-reviewed, archival journal publications that documents the ability to successfully complete and analyze computational modeling results with respect to experimental observations. Demonstrated expertise is required in nuclear systems analysis, reactor safety, and thermal hydraulics is required. Previous experience with nuclear system codes, fuel performance codes, and thermal hydraulic model validation is highly desirable. The position requires exceptional written and oral communication skills. Computer proficiency in programming, word processing, and presentation graphics is required.

APPLICANT INFORMATION: Position is in the Department of Nuclear Engineering. Point of contact is Prof. Nicholas Brown (nbrown49@utk.edu).
