Description:
The Clinical Veterinarian is a full-time position reporting to the Director of the Department of Comparative Medicine. The incumbent is responsible for medical care of research animals, performing experimental surgical procedures, assistance in the design and monitoring of research projects, training of faculty, staff, and students, and participating in IACUC protocol review and inspections. The Clinical Veterinarian participates in the Tulane Laboratory Animal Medicine Training Program as a faculty mentor to residents in the program. The incumbent has weekend and holiday on-call clinical duties. The Clinical Veterinarian is highly organized, self-motivated, and able to function in a complex university setting. The incumbent is considered essential personnel and may be required to report to work during the emergency closure of the University.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine
- Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in one of the 50 states
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY:
- Displays excellent organization and planning skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to interact professionally with faculty, staff, residents, and students
- Demonstrates initiative toward continuous improvement
SPECIAL REQUIRED ABILITY FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:
- Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University’s Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program annually.
- Ability to perform job duties while wearing respiratory protection.
- Individuals may be offered or, in some cases, required to receive vaccinations against infectious agents.
REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL, AND DRUG SCREENING FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:
Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.

- ACLAM boarded
- Knowledge of applicable animal welfare regulations, policies, guidelines, and accreditation requirements to include the responsibilities and functions of the IACUC.
