A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) is seeking a full-time, exempt Affiliated Practice Registered Dental Hygienist Instructor on the Mesa, Arizona campus. This position reports to the Director of Public Health Dentistry and Teledentistry. The Instructor will conduct teaching, patient care, scholarly and service activities as part of the dental public health team in support of the mission, goals and objectives of the School and University. Primary responsibility to facilitate the students’ preclinical, clinical, and community-based experience in dental public health with a focus on preventive care and education in the scope of dental hygiene practice in dental public health for patients and communities, interprofessional education and collaborative care, and support for various public health, community and student-run programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • General – conduct teaching, scholarship, service and patient care in support of the mission and goals of ASDOH and ATSU. Promote an atmosphere of respect, collegiality, commitment to diversity and social justice, and humanistic learning environment.
  • Teaching –preclinical, clinical, and community-based clinical supervision as a dental hygienist in the Simulation Lab, ASDOH clinics and community-based sites; effectively carry out lecture, seminar, preclinical and clinical assignments as assigned including topics related to patient assessment, patient management, prevention, dental hygiene, dental public health, and teledentistry. Provide interprofessional education and collaborative care instruction for ASDOH and other integrated ATSU and collaborative partner programs.
  • Service – Participate in committees, faculty governance, professional societies and associations, community events, and provision of CE.
  • Patient Care and Treatment - Provide direct patient care in ASDOH Clinics and community-base sites that supports community service, efficient clinic operations, student/resident education, or when in the best interest of the patient.
  • Scholarship and Grants - Establish and maintain scholarly and/or research activity in area of expertise, including grants, at level consistent with scheduled annual workload.
  • Clinical Supervision: Provide clinical supervision of predoctoral dental students, and other ATSU health sciences students in patient care activities within the scope of dental hygiene practice.
  • Documentation: Complete documentation on student performance and progress towards competency; review and approve EHR.
  • Enforce clinic policy including infection control, quality improvement, risk management, recordkeeping, etc & assure safety.
  • Provide direct patient care in the scope of dental hygiene, including teledentistry, and that supports the school and programs including but not limited to the purposes of community service, efficient clinic operations, student education, or when in the best interest of the patient.
  • Instruct students as assigned; effectively carry out lecture, seminar and clinical assignments and responsibilities as assigned, including appropriate student assessment. Be readily available to students for mentoring and consultation.
  • Support Dental Public Health Programs as assigned including DIC, CEO, SAPC, ICSP, GKAS, After Care, and ASDOH Clinic Programs, which includes transporting mobile dental and teledentistry equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Grants: Identify and submit grants and grant reports in support of ASDOH programs, including data collection and analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene.
  • Affiliated practice eligible. 
  • Three to five years experience in either the provision of dental hygiene or instruction of hygiene technique.
  • Valid local anesthesia license. 
  • Ability to work with patients of all ages and abilities.
  • Desirable skills and traits include ability to work with mobile dentistry or teledentistry, educational experience in dentistry or dental hygiene, self-starter and Community Dental Health Coordinator (CDHC) training.
  • Must enjoy working with a number of populations of dental patients including children, adults with special needs, youth in detention centers, seriously mentally ill adults, etc.
  • Must be able to work in many different settings, working with different dental students, different locations, etc.
  • Willing to work with, mentor and guide students
  • Flexibility and self-management.
  • Will be responsible for driving the University vehicle, loading and unloading it with some equipment.
  • Will need to be able to lift, wheel, carry mobile equipment to and from the vehicle with or without assistance.
