Job Description

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of specialized duties related to the operation of the Child Development Center, and affiliated programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist in the operation of the Child Development Center and related areas; perform specialized duties to assure efficient center operations.

Prepare and issue material and equipment for student and staff use in the center; provide assistance to students and staff according to instructions by coordinators or instructors; maintain records of fees and tuition, materials and equipment based on established procedure.

Order, receive, store, maintain inventory and keep current all records of materials and equipment; purchase supplies, small equipment and snack items.

Monitor budget expenditures.

Maintain the center's environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure the security and proper use of assigned equipment and materials.

Operate a personal computer including various software packages to enter and retrieve data using keyboarding skills in an efficient and effective manner consistent with requirements of the position.

Receive, account for and deposit tuition and other fees.

Prepare and/or maintain various records and reports including personnel, enrollment, child and student records, Perkins/other grants/CACFP (Food Program) follow-up, equipment and repair, supply and equipment inventories and purchasing.

Upon direction, maintain an active Child Development Center staff substitute list and call for substitutes as needed.

Perform general clerical duties as needed, including duplicating, scanning, mailing, emailing, word-processing, and maintaining database for families and telephoning.

Under the direction/supervision of the Center Coordinator, train and provide work assignments to student workers and other personnel.

Assist the center coordinator in scheduling of staff and students.

Assist in planning and implementing special functions for both center and regular instructional program including parent and advisory meetings, open houses and fund-raisers.

Attend all staff meetings and special functions.

Supervise groups of children when needed during routines, transitions and pre-school experiences.

Implement established emergency procedures in accordance with center policies.

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Appropriate principles, practices and procedures used in child care and preschool programs.
  • Basic first aid course.
  • Principles and practices of providing work direction to students.
  • Recordkeeping techniques and basic office practices.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Service orientation and interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Methods used in the organization of a child care program.
  • Purchase and inventory materials used in a child care program.


ABILITY TO:
  • Provide accurate information and assistance to center clients including students, center and college staff, parents and children regarding the use of center equipment and materials and center operations.
  • Assure proper care, storage and security of equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Maintain equipment in proper working order.
  • Operate a personal computer including various software packages to enter and retrieve data using keyboarding skills in an efficient and effective manner consistent with requirements of the position.
  • Work independently with minimum direction and as a member of a team with all staff.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective and service oriented professional relationships with other people including co-workers, parents, students, children, faculty and the general public.
  • Adhere to schedules and time lines.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Train and provide work direction to student workers.
  • Demonstrate effective interaction and guidance techniques with children in accordance with center mission and philosophy.
  • Provide a safe, healthy and developmentally appropriate environment for young children.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to an Associate Degree in Child Development or graduation from high school and completion of course work leading to a Site Supervisor Permit and one additional year of experience as an aide or teacher in a child care or preschool program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Child Development Center program; subject to childhood communicable diseases; must be able to see and hear a child from across the room or playground. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
