Research Program Coordinator
The focus of the overall clinical research program is to examine the contribution of adequate blood flow to the brain in the perioperative period to delirium and cognitive decline after cardiac surgery. The Research Coordinator will have core responsibilities in the conduct of an observational cohort study in cardiac surgery patients to examine perioperative cerebral perfusion, postoperative delirium, and perioperative cognitive status. The research coordinator would be based in the physical space of the Clinical Research Core within the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine. A Research Nurse would provide support and supervision, in addition to the PI of the grant, who is a Cardiac Anesthesiologist and Clinical Researcher. The research staff would have substantial interactions with patients. This position is highly appropriate for recent college or master's-level graduates who are interested in medical school or other medical training and desire patient contact within a clinical research setting. There are also academic opportunities (i.e. abstracts, manuscripts) in related areas within the research program of the PI.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • We anticipate enrolling 1-2 patients/week in the observational study. Key tasks would include
  • Screening and obtaining consent.
  • Coordinating and performing a 1-hour cognitive testing battery prior to surgery and then 1-month and 1-year after surgery. These tests could be performed in the hospital or at the patient's home.
  • Assessing delirium daily on postoperative days 1-4. This could include weekends.
  • Processing several blood samples.
  • Coordinating intra- and post-operative monitoring.
  • Abstraction of data from the electronic health record.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with patients and/or great inter-personal skills would be helpful.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
