Job Description

The Business Intelligence & Operations Manager is a member of the Comptroller's Office Business Intelligence and Analysis (BIA) team. This position develops and maintains an advanced understanding of the BIA team, Comptroller's Office, and University Finance and Business Services (UFBS) divisional needs and their alignment with university strategic goals and objectives. This position develops data-driven insights and creates strategies to manage and maintain business processes and systems in support of these goals and objectives. Collaborates with subject matter experts across the division to determine the value and viability of proposed business needs, goals, and objectives. Evaluates current and designs future financial business processes to improve user experience and effectiveness of financial operations. Collaborates with business partners and stakeholders to identify goals, best practices, and other methods for gathering and analyzing processes, business applications, and data.

Business Intelligence and Analysis, Functional Design - 40%
  • Develops and maintains an advanced understanding of BIA team, Comptroller's Office, and University Finance and Business Services (UFBS) divisional initiatives, policies, business processes, and systems (including PeopleSoft Financials, ServiceNow, OnBase, and others).
  • Elicits requirements for complex prioritized, financial projects independently.
  • Gathers information from a variety of sources within the business unit and from others impacted across the university; works with a project team of functional and technical staff to create project vision, business cases, work plans, and business design specifications.
  • Applies subject matter expertise within business intelligence and operations team.
  • Develops new procedures to apply to complex issues; proactively recognizes business needs and impact of issue at hand; identifies and implements new, creative solutions that may extend beyond assigned job.
  • Works to better understand problems and needs of the department through interviews, business process mapping, surveys, workflow analyses, etc. and develops recommendations for change.
  • Works on multiple tasks and projects simultaneously with a high level of quality and timeliness.
  • Gathers, cleans, and analyzes data and other pieces of information to help support recommendations for change.
  • Understands and applies appropriate data handling practices with university data.

Provide System and Process Support - 20%
  • Independently provides end user support to diagnose and resolve issues in systems and processes used by the Comptroller's Office and other supported units.
  • Anticipates and investigates system/process issues and proposes potential solutions.
  • Identifies risk factors associated with departmental systems and recommends and processes mitigation strategies to ensure security and continuity of operations.

Automation and Efficiency Identification and Analysis - 20%
  • Develops strategies and tools to drive efficiency, consistency and streamline departmental and University business processes and operations.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve daily work outcomes, processes, and operations and builds cases for change.
  • Collaborates with finance professionals, business analysts, and stakeholders to develop and utilize metrics and KPIs to measure business process efficiencies and effectiveness.

Education and Policy Development - 15%
  • Develops, implements, and leads initial and ongoing training programs and professional development workshops, in online and in-person modalities, on behalf of the Comptroller's Office.
  • Drafts and regularly updates documented business processes and procedures for the Comptroller's Office and other supported units.
  • Drafts Comptroller's Office policy changes, as communicated by the Comptroller, in accordance with state and university policy.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 1 - 2 years of process management, finance, or accounting experience.
  • 2 - 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Accounting, finance, and/or business intelligence experience in higher education.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $72,445 - $90,556. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
