This position is posted as Associate Vice President, Central Advancement, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Associate Vice President, University Development.

Job Description

The Associate Vice President, Central Advancement will lead cross-institutional fundraising priorities and programs for NAU Advancement | Foundation at Northern Arizona University. The AVP, Central Advancement is responsible for the comprehensive strategy, performance, and supervision of existing and new Central Advancement fundraising programs, including annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, and planned giving. The position will also serve as a liaison between KNAU and NAU Athletics fundraising. The Central Advancement team is a high-performing, collaborative team that works across the institution and cross-functionally within NAU Advancement | Foundation to secure gifts supporting university-wide priorities, initiatives, and programs. The AVP will ensure effective strategy, implementation, evaluation, reporting, and refinement of Central Advancement activities and goals to support and achieve the division's annual and Comprehensive Campaign goals and objectives. This includes ensuring the Central Advancement areas have clear strategic objectives, measurable outcomes, aspirational work plans, performance metrics, and is well positioned to support NAU's Elevating Excellence. The AVP will serve as an active member of the Advancement Executive Leadership team, assisting with strategic planning and implementation of Advancement priorities. The AVP will be responsible for personally managing a portfolio of donors and prospects. Emphasis will be on securing and increasing major and principal gifts supporting university-wide initiatives tied to NAU's 2025 -Elevating Excellence. This position reports to the Vice President for Advancement and the Chief Executive Officer of the NAU Foundation.

Strategic and Departmental Oversight
  • Provide vision, strategic guidance, supervision including the development of performance metrics for individual major gift officers and units reporting to Central Advancement including Corporate Foundation Relations, Planned Gifts, and Annual Giving.
  • Develop a high level of collaboration and team building to existing and new Central Advancement areas.
  • Oversee selection, performance management, and coaching for Central Advancement team.
  • Maintain a strong working partnership with KNAU and NAU Athletics fundraising activities and development programs.
  • Work closely with university leadership, staff, and college/campus partners to ensure clear understanding of priority objectives and expected outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with NAU Advancement | Foundation team members to ensure effective implementation of division activities to enhance annual and Campaign goals.
  • Provide program and budget oversight of Central Advancement area budgets, ensuring efficient stewardship of resources.

Division Leadership and Service
  • Participate as a member of the NAU Advancement | Foundation Executive Leadership team assisting with strategic planning and implementation of priorities.
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures to guide the daily operations of the division.
  • In collaboration and consultation with the Associate Vice President of College Development, provide systematic planning and reporting to include such items as forecasting, pipeline activity and status reports, budgetary reports, annual reports, etc.
  • Serve as a representative of the Vice President of Advancement in meetings, committees, or with activities as assigned.
  • Develop opportunities to provide team members professional growth experiences to enhance their skills as development professionals.
  • Participate in NAU Foundation Board and development initiatives by guiding Board members' activities as appropriate and assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in relevant field.
    • Minimum of five (5) years of major gift fundraising experience in a comprehensive development program, preferably in higher education.
    • Minimum of five (5) years leading/managing/supervising development professionals with demonstrated ability in managing staff, hiring, performance management, and skills assessment and coaching.
    • Experience in cultivation, solicitation and closing of significant major gifts ($100,000+).
    • Capital and comprehensive campaign experience, preferably within a higher education institution.


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's degree in relevant field.
    • Experience with central development and constituent development operations.
    • Demonstrated experience in program development, implementation, and review, as well as budget and resource management.
    • Proven ability to build and lead teams within discrete units as well as across an institution to achieve/exceed annual strategic goals and objectives.
    • Demonstrated experience working in and with a culturally diverse community.

    Background Information

    This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.     This is an Administrator (ADM) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Administrators are hired on a contract basis renewable each year according to terms of the Conditions of Administrative Service. These terms can be found on the Arizona Board of Regents website.
    Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
