This position is on site at our Cullowhee campus and on-site as the health and physical education teacher at WCU’s lab school (The Catamount School) for grades 6, 7, 8 for the full school year.

The School of Teaching and Learning at Western Carolina University invites applications for the position of Instructor in a one-year, fixed-term position beginning August 2023.

The Position and the Responsibilities: The successful candidate will join a strong faculty in the Health and Physical Education and Health Liberal Studies program within the School of Teaching and Learning at one of the nation’s most beautiful and dynamic universities. In a program that highly values collaboration and diversity, the successful candidate will be expected to perform a broad range of activities. The workload is distributed among the following: serving as the on-site HPE teacher at WCU’s lab school (The Catamount School) for grades 6, 7, 8 for the full school year; coordinating and supervising HPE clinical experiences at The Catamount School; teaching courses within the Health and PE and/or Health Liberal Studies program as assigned.

The successful candidate will also teach undergraduate health liberal studies courses for the School of Teaching and Learning, and other courses as assigned. The candidate will also teach daily Health and Physical Education (HPE) at the Catamount School and coordinate and supervise pre-service HPE teachers.

The candidate must also provide service to The Catamount School (TCS), the department, and the college and advise undergraduate students. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to teach resident students in both on campus and online formats and show initiative in providing service to the public schools and the region. Preference will be given to candidates who can work collaboratively across disciplines to address the education of students living in diverse environments and those who can teach in other programs in the School of Teaching and Learning.

Because this position includes serving as the on-site HPE teacher at TCS, it extends an additional 10th month beyond a typical 9 month WCU faculty contract.

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to public engagement through their teaching, service, and scholarship.

The applicant must have a minimum of a master’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution in health, health education, physical education or closely related field required prior to start date. Candidates must be eligible for licensure in health and/or physical education and have K-12 teaching experience.

Preference will be given to the candidate who has at least three years successful experience in K-12 and/or post-secondary teaching environments; shows a willingness to work with middle grades students and pre-service teachers in a lab school environment; has excellent oral and written communication skills; and demonstrates ability/interest in using technology in the classroom.
