The Position:
Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Communications Studies at San Diego City College beginning Fall 2023. One of four colleges in the San Diego Community College District, City College is an urban campus dedicated to Social Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. City College provides academic and vocational offerings to meet the needs of a diverse student population. The college is minutes away from a world-class zoo, Balboa Park, and Chicano Park.

While the current vacancy is at City College, applicants may be assigned to any District facility at the option of the Chancellor. The assignment may include some combination of day, evening, Saturday, online, and/or off-campus classes. The Assistant Professor, Communication Studies is in the Department of Communications and reports to the Dean of the School of Arts, Humanities, Communications & Telecommunications.

Major Responsibilities:
The faculty member will implement educational program courses, experiences, and services that will directly aid students in achieving educational objectives; maintain regular office hours; assist in curriculum development and planning; and participate in professional development activities.

The primary responsibility of the Communications Studies faculty member is to teach the breadth of Communications Studies courses offered at San Diego City College. The instructional assignment will be 15 class hours per week. Additional responsibilities of the faculty member include maintaining regular office hours for student advisement, serving on College and District committees, participating in various departmental and college activities, developing curriculum and programs, and a willingness to take on leadership roles in the department.

Qualifications:
Master’s in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or the equivalent

Desired Qualifications:

• Ability to create effective lessons incorporating appropriate culturally responsive pedagogies and methodologies.
• Participation or interest in profession development activities.
• Recent, successful college teaching experience in areas of Oral Communication, Intercultural Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Advanced Public Speaking, Argumentation, Voice & Articulation, Small Group, Communication and Community, and/or other communication classes.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrates cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and employees.
• Experience and/or knowledge in working with students with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.
• Understanding of current and emerging instructional delivery technologies and demonstrated experience and/or commitment to integrating new technologies into the learning process.

Licenses:
[If possess] California Community College Instructor Credential in Communication Studies (valid for life)

Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A – Class 6, Step C ($6,301.36 – $8,490.72) per month based on the current AFT – College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable.

The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
