Post-Doctoral Research Associate – Amphibian Diseases

The Amphibian Disease Laboratory located in School of Natural Resources and the Center for Wildlife Health at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville is seeking a highly motivated, early-career professional (Ph.D., D.V.M., or equivalent) to work as post-doctoral research associate for at least one year on amphibian disease research supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, EEID project 2207922, “Socioeconomic and Epidemiological Drivers of Pathogen Dynamics in Wildlife Trade Networks.” The individual will work with a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional team of scientists to identify how socioeconomic decisions made by businesses and consumers drive pathogen dynamics in the U.S. pet amphibian trade network. The post-doc will be responsible for coordinating various project activities, including pathogen surveillance in international shipments to the US. The individual is expected to lead independent research associated with amphibian diseases and contribute to the analysis and publication of existing datasets. The post-doc will mentor and supervise a PhD student and several undergraduates supported by the project.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:  PhD, DVM, or equivalent degree in biological sciences, veterinary medicine, or a related field. The individual must have a passion for research, be interested in pursuing a career in disease ecology or One Health, work effectively in teams, and be able to conduct research and supervise graduate and undergraduate students independently. Project participation for one-year is required.

Preferred qualifications: One of the above terminal degrees and substantial experience with conducting replicated experiments, amphibian husbandry, biosecurity protocols, microbiological techniques, DNA extractions, and qPCR. Exceptional candidates will have strong analytical skills and a record of presenting and publishing research. Experience with facilitating discussions among scientists and interacting with public stakeholders is desired.
