Materials Science and Engineering

Focus: Advanced Manufacturing of Hybrid Structural Materials

Description: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is pleased to announce an immediate opening for a postdoctoral associate position in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), focused on friction stir deposition additive manufacturing.  The position resides in Dr. Eric Lass’ research group at the University of Tennessee Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (IAMM), located immediately across the river from the UTK main campus.  Some duties may involve equipment located on the main campus.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be expected to lead efforts to understand microstructural evolution and deformation mechanisms of novel alloys during thermo-mechanical processing, including the use of x-ray diffraction, and optical, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy to elucidate fundamental processing-structure-property relationships. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Preparing project reports, presentations, and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Train and mentor graduate and undergraduate students working on related projects.
  • Maintain and organize laboratory resources.

The position requires a Ph.D. in MSE or related field.  Candidates who will obtain their degree by July 31, 2023, will also be considered.  The nature of the work requires U.S. citizenship.  Experience in the experimental investigation of microstructure and phase transformations in advanced materials is expected.  Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, with a demonstrated track record of high quality, independent research and publication.  The initial appointment is a regular full-time position available for 12 months, with potential for renewal subject to performance and available funding.  All applicants must apply online to receive consideration.  Please attach a letter of interest, an updated CV, and the names and contact information for at least three professional references.
