Post Doctoral Research Associate

Description: The University of Tennessee is pleased to announce an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate in the area of purified gas testing.  The candidate must have a demonstrated experience with vacuum equipment, materials metrology, and/or chemical processes. Specific experience in mass spectrometry, infrared transient absorption spectroscopy, and actinide chemistry is desired but not required.  Excellent written, as evidenced by a prolific publication record, and oral communication skills are necessary.  A PhD in Chemical Engineering (preferred), or Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related field is required; candidates that are finishing their degree will also be considered.  Applicants can start the position if they have finished the PhD degree requirements, even if the degree has not been conferred.  Importantly, the applicant must be able to pursue a Q-clearance.  The candidate will be advised by Dr. Philip D. Rack at the University of Tennessee and a scientist at the Y-12 National Security Complex. 



Qualifications

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research and development to implement novel chemical processes focused on actinide chemistry
  • Develop in-situ process meteorology/measurements
  • Conduct mass spectrometry measurements of gasses.
  • Conduct reaction dynamic experiments of gasses using infrared transient absorption spectroscopy.
  • Perform data analyses of experimental results with uncertainty quantification.
  • Study fundamental fluid dynamics properties of metal halides and other specialized gasses.
  • Develop reports detailing research conclusions and experimental results for delivery to NNSA sponsors.
