As part of a grant funded training program dedicated to job creation and revenue growth for small business owners and entrepreneurs, the Business Advisor provides business coaching, guidance and mentoring support to program participants (“scholars”). The Business Advisor participates in program scholar recruitment, application review and selection for admission. Work with scholars to inform their development of plans for business growth. Connect scholars to external business support services. Supports the grant assessment process. Supports alumni through encouraging participation in required assessments. Connect with local and national partners.

This is a temporary, grant-funded position. Employment is based on the continuation of grant funding. #ID23

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Meet with scholars on an individual basis at least 6 times per program (target of approximately 1 hour per meeting) to guide business growth with the final meeting dedicated to quality control of the growth plan.

  • Work with scholars to understand, collect and apply business metrics to support growth.

  • Bring appropriate business practitioner-oriented expertise to the program.

  • Help scholars translate course content and relate learning to their specific business.

  • Lead weekly or bi-weekly planning sessions to support scholar business growth.

  • Participate in program scholar recruitment, selection, and coaching.

  • Review scholar applications as part of admission process.

  • Connect with the local and national partners as guided by the Education Services Director.

  • Participate in scholar recruiting as directed by the Outreach Director.

  • Review accepted scholar data (applications and baseline assessment tools) to understand scholar’s individualized needs as well as the needs of the cohort.

  • Connect scholars to external business support services as needed for specialty services.

  • Assigned responsibilities for measurement and evaluation data collection and validation (baseline and graduation).

  • Manage the coaching and mentorship approach and schedule.

  • Create and maintain scholar profiles, cohort tracker, onboarding surveys, panel requests/bios/facilitation, classroom service requests and other tools related to cohort management and quality control.

  • Inform scholars about how to use a Business Advisors appropriately (preparation, discussion and debrief, and follow-up).

  • Assist within the classroom to coordinate group activities and support faculty.

  • Attend all preparation meetings (pre-briefs, walkthroughs, debriefs, SSS, BA Prep), as well as modules, clinics and program events to support scholar learning.

  • In collaboration with the Alumni Manager, manage assessment of scholars, and encourages alumni completion of assessments and event attendance.

  • In collaboration with the Education Services Director, actively participates in the assessment of the program through team debriefing and review process.

  • Participate in Faculty and Business Advisor Training Seminar with a particular focus on coaching and providing guidance for business growth using the program deliverables, Techniques for facilitating peer learning, planning and conducting individual support meetings with scholars, understanding the content and delivery approach of the curriculum.

  • Actively participate in team meetings, divisional meetings, and hiring committees, related to the successful execution of the 10KSB grant, divisional and College priorities.

  • Other duties as needed to support program success.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree required; concentration in business related area preferred. Any and all degree(s) must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

  • Minimum five (5) years direct experience in small business ownership, entrepreneurship, or engagement.

  • Minimum five (5) years direct demonstrated experience in understanding functional areas of business operations, including small business finance.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituents required.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail required.

  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of MS Word and Excel required.

  • Committed to working with designated scholars in a facilitative and supportive manner to identify their business needs and provide or obtain appropriate assistance.

  • Works in a collaborative and supportive manner within the classroom and in advising sessions to help the scholars complete the program and program deliverables.

  • Understand and value the importance of metrics through measurement and evaluation activities.

  • Dedication to the program outcomes of job creation and revenue generation.

  • An understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff and students required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience as a business advisor, consultant, coach, or mentor is preferred
    .
  • Knowledge and understanding of the comprehensive community college mission is preferred

  • Advanced degree in business administration or related area is preferred.
