About the Department:

The Deason Criminal Justice Reform Center, based at SMU Dedman School of Law, is a nonpartisan center for research and advocacy that combines data-driven research and compelling stories to advocate for innovative criminal justice reform. By combining these stats and stories, the Deason Center practices an impactful model of research for reform. The Stats: We collect, analyze, and assess the data that drive smart, sane, and sensible transformation. The Stories: We uncover, recount, and amplify the stories of people who live, work, and struggle in our criminal legal system.

About the Position:

This role is an in-person position at the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office.

The Victim Intake Fellows will be at the forefront of an evidence-based assessment of criminal justice practices in cases involving assault victims. At the direction of Deason Center staff, they will implement a randomized controlled trial by providing support to the Dallas County District Attorney's Office for one year. Work will include contacting and interviewing crime victims, providing them with information about the court process, and directing them toward resources and services. Fellows will conduct phone interviews to produce risk assessment metrics and work with professionals in the DA's office to develop safety plans. Fellows will also coordinate with local social service agencies to obtain information and referrals, as needed. Finally, they will assist in applications for crime victim's compensation claims, and perform other related duties as directed. Data collection and reporting complete their responsibilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Contact and interview individuals who are victims of a crime for which a suspected perpetrator has been arrest.

  • Provide information about the court process, resources, and referrals.

  • Gather and transmit risk assessment and safety planning information.

  • Work with outside agencies to obtain information and coordinate services.

  • Assist with crime victim's compensation claims.

  • Data collection and reporting Deason Center Staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A bachelor’s degree is required. Candidate with master's degree is preferred. Coursework/degree in social work, psychology or criminal justice is preferred. 

Experience interacting with victims of crime, conducting trauma-based interviews, or working in a prosecutor's office is preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public while maintaining confidentiality. Bilingual (Spanish-speaking) candidate is preferred. Basic knowledge of Word and Excel is desired. Candidate with knowledge and prior experience using case management system is preferred. Candidate with certification or licensure in social work and/or social service-related programs is preferred. 

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across diverse audiences and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills. 

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
