If so, then Kalamazoo Valley Community College may have the ideal part-time summer job opportunity for you.

This seasonal position is part of a team responsible for assisting the Production Manager with producing food at the urban farm at the Food Innovation Center (224 East Crosstown Parkway, Kalamazoo MI 49001). The team works to grow vegetables in a variety of settings at the Food Innovation Center and to build the capacity of the farm. Specifically, the team will be planting, weeding, and harvesting, as well as assisting with building and monitoring additional growing and educational spaces. The Lab Assistant will work alongside a crew of high school youth interns during the summer. Training will be provided as needed.

This is a seasonal position through October 31, 2023 and will require working occasionally one weekend day.

Minimum Qualifications::

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Candidates must be motivated, reliable, and able to work in a food-safe environment.

Must be able to communicate clearly and work as a member of the team.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience::

Prior experience in vegetable/plant production using field, greenhouse, hydroponic, aquaponic, and/or permaculture growing techniques will be considered an asset.

Prior experience leading a team or crew.

Prior experience working with high school age people.

Physical Demands::

Lifting, bending, stooping, and standing required. Must be able to lift 40 lbs. Ability to work in hot, cold, wet, and dry conditions. Much of the work is outdoors during the normal growing season.

Work Hours::

Typical hours are 7am-4:30pm, with some evening and occasionally one weekend day as assigned.
