Job Details

Since producing learning is the primary function of the college, it is the principal responsibility of each instructional staff member to effectively and efficiently stimulate learning in every course.  In addition, each instructional staff member should provide guidance to students through their role as an academic advisor and in more informal ways.  Each staff member is expected to participate in the governance of the college through committees and divisional meetings, through shared leadership within and across divisions, through personal recommendations to college administrators.

Essential Duties:

  • Deliver areas of instruction that will prepare students to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, service, and maintain all types of automobiles. Includes instruction in brake systems, electrical systems, engine performance, engine repair, suspension and steering, automatic and manual transmissions and drive trains, and heating and air condition systems, and related topics according to ASE Educational guidelines. 
  • Orientate and maintain a Skills USA chapter as Automotive Systems Technology program advisor.  
  • Maintain a professional attitude toward teaching and professional relationships. 
  • Maintain the ASE Educational Automotive Systems certified program for post-secondary level education. 
  • Establish and conduct working lab conditions that mirror a fully functioning automotive repair facility. Classes and Labs must operate according to ASE Educational standards and comply with appropriate OSHA and EPA regulations.  
  • Establish and follow all course syllabi guidelines for the curriculum for the grading process, class content, on-line class instruction, class hours, attendance and ASE Educational tasks taught.
  • Responsible for lab cleanliness during and after session and ensures that all cars are in working order after each lab session
  • Curriculum review of program courses.  Revision / update course content as necessary.
  • Maintain annual program assessment; revise annually as results indicate. 
  • Maintain annual budget for program.
  • Schedule courses with approval of the area Dean for ensuring students can progress through the program in an orderly and timely sequence.
  • Advise and register students while demonstrating genuine interest for the general welfare of all students.
  • Prepare adequately for all assigned classes and conduct all classes in a professional manner.
  • Classroom management with regard to providing an orderly, clean, safe working environment, while ensuring that all related equipment is maintained within budget constraints.
  • Develop and carry out student testing program in all classes taught that meets College policy and standards.
  • Develop, maintain and record student learning outcomes for courses and associated program(s)
  • Maintain accurate records and reports and submit these in a timely manner to the appropriate person.
  • Partner with automotive repair facilities for better understanding of their applicable needs, then transferring those needs into the program curriculum.  
  • Maintain the technical competencies necessary to the job function.
  • Maintain mastery ASE and currency in the Automotive Repair field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Remains current in state and federal regulation requirements through professional development activities offered by the College and other opportunities including but not limited to: off-campus activities, webinars, conference, etc., as approved. 
  • Participates in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings and other cocurricular activities of the College. 
  • Enhances communication with area high schools and serves as a liaison between area high schools and the College.  
  • Ability to facilitate learning for students from diverse backgrounds including but not limited to: culture, ethnicity, age, gender, and ability.
  • Willingness to provide instruction to curriculum, continuing education, workforce training or other students which may be scheduled as day, evening, weekend, or online options.
  • Builds community and business relations.  Maintains regular, professional communications within the college and affiliated business and industry contacts. 
  • Coordinates career-oriented activities with program faculty/staff. 
  • Attends scheduled meetings and coordinate meetings for faculty/staff. 
  • Serves on and actively contributes to college committees as assigned. 
  • Provides administrative support for grant programs and proposal for new grants. 
  • Gather data and prepares reports for state, regional, national, and federal agencies as required.  
  • Conducts special projects and performs other duties as assigned. \
  • Willing to travel and participate in events during the day, evening and on the weekends. 
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Division Dean and Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer.

The SCC college campus is located on Hwy. 74-76 between Whiteville and Chadbourn in southeastern North Carolina.  SCC is an hour's drive from historic Wilmington, the beaches of Southeast North Carolina, and South Carolina's Grand Strand beaches.  Serving Columbus County and surrounding areas, the college enjoys local financial and moral support from a community which expresses great pride in the institution.
