Sequoias Community College District is seeking an equity-minded candidate to fill a one-year temporary full-time Pharmacy Technician faculty position in the Allied Health Department beginning August 2023.

Job Duties

Under the direction of the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health, the faculty member will be responsible for planning, coordinating, facilitating, and monitoring activities on behalf of the academic program and in coordination with clinical sites. The basic teaching assignment will be in Pharmacy Technician courses.

Assignments may include evening classes and teaching at any of the Sequoias Community College District campuses: Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the Sequoias Community College District by way of committee assignments is encouraged.

Other responsibilities include maintenance of office hours, participation in department and/or division responsibilities, and the willingness to create and participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, which is respectful of diversity Districtwide.

Qualifications

The candidate must meet the following criteria:
  • Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience.
    OR
  • Any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
    OR
  • Any associate degree, and an accredited Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT), and four years of professional experience.
    OR
  • The Equivalent
    AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, which pursuant to Title 5 §53022, is a core system competency and job requirement.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    The Allied Health Department is looking for evidence of the ability to do the following:
  • The primary teaching assignments will be Pharmacy Technician courses; to include courses such as Intro to Pharm Technician, Pharmacy Calculations, Pharmacology, Pharmacology Outpatient Practice, Pharmacy Law and Professional Standards, Pharmacology Externship, Self-Care and Wellness.
  • Assess and monitor academic requirements of the Pharmacy Technician program
  • Maintain American Society of Health System Pharmacists/ASHP accreditation for the Pharmacy Technician certificate
  • Monitor and refine the clinical education component of the curriculum.
  • Facilitate quality-learning experiences for students during classroom, lab and clinical education.
  • Evaluate students' performance, in cooperation with other faculty, to determine their ability to integrate didactic and clinical learning experiences and to progress within the curriculum.
  • Address the needs of diverse and frequently underprepared student populations taking a wide range of college level course.
  • Use a variety of teaching strategies and assessment methods that encourage retention while successfully challenging a diverse student population.
  • Successful experience teaching students of ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Select clinical learning environments that demonstrate characteristics of sound patient/client management, ethical and professional behavior, and currency with Pharmacy Technician practice.
  • Maximize available resources for the classroom, lab and clinical education components of the program.
  • Provide documented records and assessment of the classroom and clinical education component including clinical education sites, clinical educators, etc.
  • Engage in educational planning, implementation and assessment.
  • Communicate between the Academic Institution and Affiliated Clinical Education Sites.
  • Perform academic responsibilities consistent with American Society of Health System Pharmacists /ASHP.
  • Manage clinical responsibilities consistent with ASHP, federal/state regulations, institutional policy, and practice setting requirements.
  • Implement procedures for clinical site selection, utilization, and assessment.
  • Collaborate with clinical faculty to promote, coordinate, plan and provide clinical faculty development opportunities using effective instructional methodologies and technologies.
  • Teach regular curriculum classes.
  • Incorporate student learning outcome objectives within course and programs and willingness to develop and use stated objectives and measures.
  • Use alternative instructional modes, such as web-based or on-line instruction, multi-media systems, cooperative learning.
  • Take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.

    College of the Sequoias is a two-year California community college offering educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties. The college was established in 1925 and moved to its current 62-acre main campus site in Visalia in 1940.

    In addition to the campus in Visalia, COS operates a full-service center in Hanford that is also home to the college's police and fire academies.

    COS also opened its Tulare College Center in January 2013. It is a full-service college center and the home of COS' agriculture program
