Overview: 

The Juilliard School is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for part-time faculty in the Department of Music History for the 2023–24 academic year.  The department teaches courses to graduate and undergraduate students with a focus on the Western notated tradition and other musics and cultures that intersect with it. Undergraduates must complete a three-semester survey core and electives, whose topics vary widely. Graduate students must complete courses on diverse topics.   

The salary range is $5,000 - $6,000 per course, per semester.

Responsibilities: 

  • The successful candidate will teach up to two graduate and/or undergraduate courses each semester in the 2023-2024 academic year. Courses may be in the undergraduate core or in undergraduate elective or graduate course areas, depending on departmental needs. Non-core course topics will focus on (but not necessarily confined to) Western notated classical music. The candidate may draw upon their area of specialization, and the department would be especially interested in courses on the high Baroque, Italian or French opera of any period, Western-style music as cultivated in Asia since the 19th century, Asian-American musical cultures, gender, sexuality, and women’s studies in music, and electronic music.   
  • Participate in departmental meetings. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Candidates should have in hand the Ph.D. in Musicology or a related field. Candidates at the ABD stage of their musicology or related doctoral studies are also eligible to apply. 
  • Demonstrated success in college-level teaching. 

 

Preferred Additional Qualifications: 

  • A background in composition or performance, and/or proficiency with a musical instrument, including voice, is helpful.

Application Process

Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The interview process will include meeting(s) with the hiring committee, followed by a teaching demonstration.
