Position Summary:

The Center for Geospatial Research at the Department of Geography and the Department of Statistics at the University of Georgia are seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to investigate relationships between plant biometrics collected in the field and plant descriptors derived from drone-based remote sensing, in cooperation with the USDA-Agricultural Research Service. The selected candidate will join a team of researchers and will collect, assemble and analyze geospatial datasets including direct field measurements and remotely-sensed observations of plot and field areas in support of long-term agroecosystem research.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

PhD degree with training in plant ecology, agronomy, geography, or related physical sciences, with specific expertise in analytical methods and techniques, including remote sensing and the processing of datasets collected directly in the field.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies :

Desired skills include familiarity with the topics below (skills can be supplemented with training):
- Field methods applied to plant science studies.
- Collection and processing of images (RGB, multispectral, hyperspectral) and LiDAR data. Processing includes, among others, data transformations, generation of vegetation and other spectral indices, generation of point clouds from images (Structure from Motion), processing of LiDAR data, and the extraction of derived metrics.
- Recent developments in using AI tools for the processing of remotely-sensed and other geospatial data.
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the processing and analysis of multitemporal geospatial datasets.
- Use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for high positional accuracy.
- Statistical methods for geospatial data analysis and familiarity with a statistical package.
- Experience in flying medium-lift drones equipped with remote sensors (e.g., LiDAR and/or multispectral cameras) for data collection over agricultural areas.
- Writing and presentation skills for proposal development, scholarly papers and scientific presentations.
