THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Washington State University (WSU) Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks to fill a full-time continuous career track (clinical track) or permanent tenure track faculty position in Oncology. The successful applicant will join two other full-time ACVIM board-certified oncologists and a dedicated team of residents, and licensed veterinary technicians. The Clinical Oncology Service, which includes radiation and medical oncology, is situated in Pullman, WA within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), the leading academic veterinary referral center in the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest. The Department is open to flexible scheduling and novel appointment structures.

The Clinical Oncology Service is currently comprised of two boarded oncologists, one of whom is also a boarded radiation oncologist and the other a boarded small animal internist, and four residents. Staff in support of the service include two licensed veterinary technicians, a radiation therapy technician, a veterinary assistant, and a patient service coordinator to personalize the appointment schedule. Students are actively involved in all cases, and they enjoy the rotation.

The service offers comprehensive cancer care working closely with other services, in particular surgery, neurology, cardiology, internal medicine, and emergency/critical care, to meet patient needs. For imaging oncology patients our radiology service has a 64-slice computed tomographic scanner, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography, plain radiography and fluoroscopy, and nuclear scanning. The oncology service offers chemotherapy, electrochemotherapy, and radiation therapy to a patient population with a diverse array of tumors. Our radiation service is installing a new Elekta Infinity linear accelerator with a broad spectrum of delivery techniques from 3D Conformal radiotherapy to IMRT and VMAT. We expect the new instrument to be installed in fall 2023, and it will allow much greater treatment capabilities for our patients. The service sees patients from all over the Pacific northwest, Alaska and western Canada with a weekly caseload of approximately 30 rechecks and 12-15 new patients. Roughly 300 patients are treated in radiation per year.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide clinical oncology service for the VTH, clinical and didactic instruction of professional veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students, and to conduct collaborative research/scholarship within the candidate’s area of interest. Expectations for scholarship/research will be greater for a successful tenure track applicant, appropriate to rank. The successful applicant should be able to effectively communicate and work with people of diverse backgrounds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (for all ranks): The candidate must hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD) degree or foreign equivalent degree (i.e., BVSc), and be board-certified or board-eligible in Oncology by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, by the time of hire. Successful candidates should also demonstrate a commitment and relevant ability to successfully advocate for diversity and values of diversity and inclusion.

Considerations regarding rank and faculty track will be determined based on the interests and qualifications of the candidate, as will division of time between teaching, clinical duty, and scholarly activity.

For tenure track consideration, candidates should demonstrate a significant record of scholarship. Applicants for an Assistant Professor position should demonstrate potential to establish and maintain an externally funded research program. Applicants for Associate Professor should have an active research program with a record of peer-reviewed publications and national/international recognition.

Applicants for career track Clinical Associate Professor should have a record of scholarship aligned with effort devoted to scholarship in previous positions, a higher level of national/international recognition and a higher level of clinical and teaching experience as compared to Clinical Assistant Professor applicants.

Preferred qualifications for both career and tenure track applicants include a record of scholarly productivity consistent with the level of experience and appropriate to rank and track (Assistant/Associate Career or Tenure), as evidenced by collaborative basic, clinical or applied research and publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, evidence of expertise in teaching, and commitment to provision of outstanding clinical service.

AREA OVERVIEW: The VTH aspires to be the country’s best academic veterinary hospital for patients, students, clients, colleagues, and community. The joint mission of the VTH and VCS is to improve the health and well-being of all animals through excellence in medical care, training future veterinarians, and finding innovative ways to diagnose and treat disease. Dedicated to this vision and mission are more than 60 full-time faculty members and 170 staff and house officers.

The WSU CVM is organized into five departments/schools, including VCS, Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology (VMP), Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience (IPN), the School of Molecular Biosciences (SMB), and the Paul G. Allen School for Global Health, each dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and service (http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu)
