The College of Education is also home to the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research and the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation.

Essential Job Duties:

The NC State College of Education invites applications and nominations for the inaugural Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Early Literacy. The Goodnight Distinguished Professor must demonstrate a genuine commitment to the land-grant mission of NC State and the research, teaching, and engagement goals of the College of Education. We expect the Goodnight Distinguished Professor to be a leader in the College’s commitment to early literacy.
We invite applicants with a unique and promising approach to improving early literacy education. We are especially interested in applicants who engage in scholarships focused on the science of reading in the early elementary grades (K-3).
Candidates should have a proven track record of teaching and researching evidence-based early literacy practices in teacher education or K-12 settings, and specifically be able to translate current reading research into effective classroom practices for all students, including students from diverse backgrounds. Successful candidates will have demonstrated their leadership in preparing future teachers, working with in-service teachers, and preparing and mentoring future faculty focused on early literacy. They should have a commitment to service and outreach, and a focus on advancing evidence-based early literacy knowledge and practices.
It is anticipated that the Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Early Literacy will join other professors to serve as a network of early literacy expertise across North Carolina with the purpose of advancing early literacy initiatives across educator preparation programs, through engagement in outreach and dissemination of best practices. The NC State College of Education is committed to serving multilingual learners in all communities.
The inaugural Goodnight Professor will hold an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS) in the College of Education.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching courses with a focus on early literacy
  • Mentoring and advising doctoral students and junior faculty
  • Participating in program or curriculum development with attention to the development of innovative field-based experiences for students
  • Pursuing scholarly and interdisciplinary research in reading
  • Seeking external funding
  • Participating in the academic, community, and professional activities of the college and university
  • Engaging in service and outreach/extension with stakeholder groups such as school districts
  • Networking at the state and national levels with other faculty working on reading education and research

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree in reading, literacy, teacher education, curriculum and instruction, teaching/learning, or related area
  • Experience teaching early literacy courses to pre-service and/or in-service teachers
  • Record of literacy scholarship and leadership commensurate with the rank of Professor at a research-intensive university

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Outstanding record of research publications in the field of literacy with a focus on early reading (K-3)
  • Exemplary record of externally funded research and potential for developing new, high-impact externally funded projects in early literacy
  • Strong understanding of the scientific evidence base and current policy landscape, related to early literacy development and the science of reading for all students, including those from diverse language, racial, and ethnic backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in forming national and state collaborations and networks that improve educational success for elementary-aged children
  • Demonstrated record of developing ideas and innovations that have informed the practices of schools, organizations, families, and communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to the achievement of diverse learners and to increasing access to high-quality teaching and mentoring in higher education
  • Exemplary record of service and collaborative work
