SEARCH FOR THE PROVOST

University of Florida

Gainesville, Florida

The State of Florida created the University of Florida as both a land-grant and the flagship of the state’s university system. UF is the fifth largest, single-campus university in the United States, the largest in composite sponsored research, health system, budget, and enrollment metrics in Florida. The University teaches over 60,000 students and has achieved rare prominence. In 2022, UF was ranked fifth among all public universities by U.S. News & World Report, up from number 14 in 2013. It is a member institution of the Association of American Universities, and in 2022, it expended over $1 billion in sponsored research. It has 450,000 living alumni, half living in the State of Florida. It is a great American public research university and the pride of Florida.

UF is an unusually comprehensive university, with sixteen, large colleges as well as UF Health, a $4.5 billion health system, and a $1 billion faculty practice plan. In its student appeal, the University received a record number of applications for last fall’s entering class, with over 65,000 submitted. UF has devoted energy to access and affordability and has the lowest tuition and fees of any institution that are member institutions of the prestigious Association of American Universities.

UF seeks a provost equal to its vision, its courage, and its ambition.

In teaching, in scholarship and research, among alumni, in its place in Florida, and in its place in the nation, the University of Florida is one of the enduring great universities in the country. It seeks a provost who will use UF’s impressive technology and substantial investments to inform teaching, learning, and scholarship. Its provost will lead and enhance its academically rigorous environment, encourage creative inquiry, and promote original and cutting-edge research. Its provost will champion the spirit of the Chicago Principles, with their defense of creative and often contrary inquiry, their encouragement of viewpoint diversity, and their promotion of academic freedom that fuels the paradigm shifts so essential to knowledge creation. The provost leads the fundamental and then the translational work, which generates new understanding and puts innovation to practical use.

The provost is the University’s Chief Academic Officer and an essential partner for the president. At the direction of the president, the provost will work with all the University’s constituencies to develop the academic strategic plan and manage the allocation of the academic budget.  In the tenure of this provost, the University will make a series of essential investments that will enhance disciplinary strength, as well as interdisciplinarity and cross-college initiatives, to maximize its educational and research success.

The provost will lead the execution of the University’s academic strategies, will direct the development and management of the metrics for university performance, and will ensure the University’s academic accountability.  The provost is the primary guardian of shared governance and leads the University in its efforts to include faculty, staff, and students in the University’s deliberations. The provost also serves as the guardian of UF’s student experience and takes responsibility for its future. To this end, the provost takes the lead in integrating student recruitment and academic programming with experiential learning, career development, and all other co-curricular activities of student life.
