Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the College serves more than 16,000 students annually with room to expand on its 267-acre main Merced campus and 120 acre Los Banos campus site. This instructional teaching position provides the opportunity to join a Biology Department with a focus on equity and inclusion and innovative teaching strategies that enhance student success. Teaching assignments may include biotechnology, non-majors and majors biology, genetics, environmental science, anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.

    General Description:

    This is a full-time, tenure track instructional assignment at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The professor will teach a variety of courses. The specific mix of teaching assignments will vary from semester to semester. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include face-to-face, distance education, evening and weekend hours.

    Examples of Duties

    Essential Functions:
  • Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students
  • Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)
  • Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
  • Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments to continually improve student learning outcomes


  • Typical Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Required:
  • Master's degree in any biological science
  • OR Bachelor's degree in any biological science AND Master's degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science
  • OR the equivalent
  • Must employ teaching, learning, and professional practices that reflect DEIA and anti-racist principles, and in particular, respect for, and acknowledgement, of the diverse backgrounds of students and colleagues to improve equitable student outcomes and course completion.

  • Preferred:
  • Teaching experience at the college level
  • Teaching experience and/or coursework in Anatomy and Physiology
  • Related experience will be considered
  • Ability and willingness to teach all levels of biology offered at Merced College
  • Current technology skills related to teaching the discipline; a willingness to pursue future technological developments; and a commitment to integrating technology into the curriculum
  • Ability to relate the practical and the theoretical aspects of the subject matter to the student

    Interview Information:

    Those applicants deemed highly qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a screening committee, which includes a teaching demonstration on a selected topic. Interviews will be held onsite.
