ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
As the flagship student equity support program in the California Community College system, Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS) serves the State's most underserved and underrepresented student populations. Utilizing a student-centered approach, Mt. SAC's EOPS program provides over and above personalized ongoing comprehensive support services to historically underrepresented and low socioeconomic students in order to increase their sense of belonging, self-efficacy and awareness of opportunities to help students achieve their academic and personal goals. The EOPS/NextUp Counselor's scope of services include counseling/advising strategies that support the educational aspirations of current and former foster youth who are eligible for EOPS/NextUp. OVERVIEW:
The newly funded NextUp program will provide EOPS students who are current or former foster youth to access wraparound support services including counseling and advising, textbooks and school supplies, and transportation, food, and emergency housing assistance through the EOPS/NextUp program. Utilizing a student-centered approach, NextUp also provides a supportive community for students from the foster care system by increasing their sense of belonging, self-efficacy, and awareness so they can access opportunities to empower them to achieve their academic and personal goals. The EOPS/NextUp Counselor plays a critical role by providing counseling/advising as well as intrusive and specialized intervention strategies to connect students in the program to on and off-campus resources.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent.
- Teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record.
- Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis.
- Maintain scheduled office and campus hours, and participate in department/division meetings and committees.
- Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies.
- Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.
- Effective oral and written communication with students.
- Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
- Participate in departmental and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities to maintain and improve the instructional program and to provide service to the college.
- In close cooperation with other discipline faculty, participate in the design, evaluation, revision, and development of culturally relevant curriculum, courses, and/or degrees.
- Provide comprehensive counseling services to culturally diverse student populations, specifically to those who experienced the foster care system with academic, career, and personal counseling.
- Provide equity-based, individualized support to students experiencing academic and/or personal difficulty.
- Interpret certificate, associate degree, and university transfer related requirements.
- Facilitate EOPS/NextUp orientations and academic success workshops for students.
- Counsel and follow up with EOPS/NextUp students on academic/progress probation.
- Assist students in developing student educational plans (abbreviated and comprehensive).
- Participate in the planning of support programs that result in educational growth of EOPS/NextUp students.
- Represent EOPS/NextUp as a faculty counselor on campus and within the broader community by serving on departmental and college committees and taking leadership roles on campus, community, and professional organizations.
- Develop liaison relationships with Instructional Faculty.
- Maintain knowledge and use of current counseling, educational, career websites, and software.
- Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with other college departments.
- Perform other counseling related duties as assigned to meet the College’s mission as well as the mission of EOPS and NextUp, which includes providing “over, above, and in addition to" services to EOPS/NextUp students.
- Work collaboratively with other college departments including: Counseling, Financial Aid, Admissions & Records, DREAM, Career and Transfer, Student Health Services, ACCESS, CalWORKs, ARISE/AANAPISI, Center for Black Culture and Student Success, El Centro, First Peoples Native Center, Outreach and Engagement, Promise Plus+, Veterans Resources Center, Honors Program, Pride Center, and Basic Needs Resources.
- Instruct, counsel, and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective counseling and teaching methods, including for online advising and instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, and meet student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis.
- Maintain scheduled office on-campus hours, and participate in EOPS/CARE, CalWORKs, and NextUp department and Student Services Division meetings and campus committees.
- Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies.
- Serve on college committees as necessary to maintain and improve instructional programs.
- Attend, participate, and present professional development, meetings, and various College committees and advisory groups to provide Service to the College and participate in shared governance.
- Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as a part of the regular contract.
- Participate in curriculum development, learning outcome development and assessment.
A. The minimum of one of the following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:
- Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling AND EOPS counselors hired after October 24, 1987, shall:
- Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; OR
- Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages
In addition, an EOPS counselor hired after October 24, 1987, shall have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; OR
- The equivalent (please request an equivalency review in the application) (NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline); OR
- California Community College credential, “Valid for Life” (no longer issued), authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline; refer to Ed Code § 87355 (If meeting qualifications with this credential, a copy of the valid lifetime credential must be submitted with the application.);
B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.
License(s) & Other Requirements:
The incumbent may periodically be required to get to a variety of locations. If operating a vehicle, employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Conditions of Employment:
The person holding this position is required to be present on Mt. San Antonio College’s campus to perform all essential duties and responsibilities.
This is a full-time, tenure-track, 11-month contract position that begins in the 2023-24 academic year
. Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching, and related work experience, up to a maximum placement at step 9.
