(ASSISTANT) DEAN OF STUDENTS

THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

 

Reporting to and under the supervision of the Provost & Academic Dean, the (Assistant) Dean of Students (DoS) (title will depend on experience level) administers the Academic Regulations, Code of Student Conduct & Discipline, and other policies applicable to students (including discipline, exams, etc.) and manages the Office of Student Services, Student Health Services, and the Disability Resources Program. The DoS provides direct student advising (e.g., academic supervision, overseeing conditions for readmitted students); participates on faculty governance committees (as an ex officio non-faculty member) as assigned by the Provost; and engages in strategic planning and pursues initiatives regarding campus-wide diversity, wellness, bar admission (e.g., moral character).

 

 

 

Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Implements the Academic Regulations as indicated in the Regulations and in partnership with the Provost & Academic Dean and other degree program managers.
  • Enforces student conduct code, including engaging in investigations, representing the College in formal hearings, and issuing sanctions when appropriate.
  • Advises and counsels all students on student life issues, including those who have been readmitted, under academic supervision, experiencing attendance issues, managing moral character issues related to their state bar application, or undergoing other extraordinary circumstances.
  • Oversees certain co-curricular programming including Orientation and Graduation.
  • Oversees the Student Support Team. Oversees onboarding of new students on health-related matters, such as immunizations and vaccinations.
  • Serves on faculty committees and on other ad hoc committees as determined by the Provost & Academic Dean. Oversees the Office of Student Services, the Disability Resource Program, and Student Health Services.
  • Oversees registration and exam-related functions as they pertain to specific categories of students (e.g., Law & Process registration, exam issues) and otherwise works closely with the Registrar’s Office to ensure smooth administration of processes impacting students.
  • And, generally, in collaboration with the Provost & Academic Dean, oversees student affairs at the College.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school, CA or NY bar exam passer (admission to practice preferred);
  • At least five years progressively responsible experience in the supervision/administration of personnel in student facing programs in a higher education environment, preferably a law school;
  • Any equivalent combination of education and related work experience resulting in the possession of the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the job.

  • Knowledge of Bar admission requirements, law school academic programs, advising/counseling techniques and principles and practices of higher education student personnel administration.
  • Knowledge of personnel and budget administration and higher education management.
  • Ability to effectively utilize computer and related technology for various informational and operational purposes.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and propose appropriate policies or actions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with students, faculty, staff and external constituencies, with a strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to advise students about academic, professional development, and other issues.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret academic regulations.
  • Ability to be proactive, creative, and solutionoriented.
  • Demonstrated strong project management skills.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse student population and across departments, as a member of a team to advance student success.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of student records, in compliance with laws including FERPA.
  • Ability to undertake basic data compilation and analysis.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills. Must be detail-oriented, but efficient and able to prioritize.
