Assistant Vice Chancellor for Capital Planning, Design and Construction

The California State System Office (The CSU) is recruiting an Assistant Vice Chancellor for Capital Planning, Design and Construction (AVC) who will provide the senior leadership and direction for the CSU's capital outlay program, facilities operations, public private partnerships, energy program, and sustainable practices.

This key leadership position will work with 23 university presidents, the system’s Board of Trustees, and other important stakeholders in developing the facilities and infrastructure of the largest university system in the United States. With eight direct reports, the AVC manages the Chief of Planning and Design, the Chief of Construction Services, the Chief of Energy, Sustainability and Transportation, the Director of Administration, the Executive Director of Real Estate, the Chief of Facilities Operations, the Director of Real Estate Development, and the Land Title and GIS Program Manager. They will also oversee the maintenance and operations of the Chancellor’s Office headquarters facilities, including building services, custodial, logistical, and public safety/security support.

The AVC reports directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor/Chief Financial Officer (EVC/CFO) and is part of a leadership team that includes assistant vice chancellors of budget and fiscal management, capital planning, public safety, risk management, and other administrative services. The position also interacts with campus leadership and teams throughout the CSU.

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of ten years’ experience as a senior manager of capital planning, design, and/or construction. They will embody a strong customer service orientation and have demonstrated leadership in a collaborative decision-making environment with state agency, board, and senior leadership interactions. Vision, creativity, and flexibility will be hallmarks of the new AVC’s style. They will also possess excellent communication, presentation, problem solving, and team building skills and have the ability to multitask. An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution is required. The ability to travel extensively within the state of California is also required.

The California State University is the nation’s largest public four-year system of higher education in the United States and is currently being led by interim Chancellor Jolene Koester while the Board of Trustees searches for a permanent chancellor. The 23 universities of the California State University are headquartered at the Chancellor’s Office, which has administrative departments that oversee every aspect of the CSU system. These divisions include Academic and Student Affairs, Audit and Advisory Services, Business and Finance, Human Resources, General Counsel, University Relations and Advancement, and the Executive Office.
