The Dean of the Graduate College will set the vision and mission for graduate studies and enhance the competitiveness of UVM’s graduate programs. In 2022, UVM enrolled 11,326 undergraduates, 483 medical students, and 1,707 graduate students. The first graduate degree at UVM was awarded in 1807. UVM offers 27 Ph.D. programs, five professional doctorates, 58 master’s degrees and 16 Certificates of Graduate Study through the auspices of the Graduate College. These study areas include six formal cross-college interdisciplinary doctoral programs, Biomedical Engineering, Cellular, Molecular and Biomedical Sciences; Complex Systems and Data Science; Food Systems and Materials Science; Sustainable Development, Policy, Economics and Governance; Transdisciplinary Leadership and Creativity for Sustainability; and Interprofessional Health Sciences. Two master’s programs, the Master of Public Health and a Master of Professional Studies in Leadership for Sustainability are online programs; new online professional graduate programs are an opportunity for growth.
The Dean of the Graduate College will have the opportunity to guide the future direction of graduate education at UVM leading the development of a new vision and strategic plan in alignment with the strategic goals of UVM. Together with the Deans of the other Schools and Colleges, and the President, Provost and Senior Vice President, and the Vice President for Research, the Dean will advance graduate studies to support and grow research and scholarly activity, enhance and expand interdisciplinary graduate academic programs, and build professional programs.
In collaboration with the Vice President for Research and Academic Units, the Dean of the Graduate College will support professional development for approximately 100 postdoctoral associates and fellows. Recognizing the complex administrative operation of the Graduate College, the Dean will engage in strategic planning and creative leadership to effectively govern graduate studies. The Dean will advocate for graduate education as central to UVM’s success and capitalize on our strong research foundation with $250M raised in FY22, and research growth of 50% in the last 3 years. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a creative and inspiring leader as new Centers and Institutes are established, adding to our current university-wide centers and institutes such as the Gund Institute for Environment, the Osher Center for Integrative Health, and the Food Systems Research Center, and our newly formed institutes, the Institute for Rural Partnerships and the Institute for Agroecology. The Dean will increase external fellowship and scholarship opportunities and align support for graduate students and programs with the goals for research and scholarly growth. The Dean will promote UVM’s graduate programs both domestically and internationally.

The Graduate College

UVM currently offers 58 academic programs leading to a master’s degree and 27 programs leading to a doctorate as well as 5 professional doctorates. All graduate degrees at UVM are awarded by the Graduate College, except the M.D. degree, which is awarded by the Larner College of Medicine. The Graduate College includes programs and degrees in the natural, physical, and biological sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities, as well as a variety of professional programs, many of which are highly ranked and nationally recognized. Advance Scholarship and Research ExcellenceThe new Dean will contribute to UVM’s vision to become a Carnegie Research I university by fostering a strong, supportive environment of discovery and scholarship among the University’s faculty, leading to increased sponsored research funding and new collaborative research programs. The dean will provide mechanisms to support early career investigators and mentoring and incentivize mid- and late-career faculty in their efforts to grow their masters, doctoral, and postdoctoral mentees. Align Philanthropy with the Strategic GoalsThe Dean will identify and use the college’s financial, physical, and human resources to support the vision and strategic plan for the College. The Dean will seek opportunities to increase philanthropic support in collaboration with the UVM Foundation to provide scholarships and to support research. This will include creating a culture of philanthropy among graduate and postdoctoral alumni. The Dean will actively participate in development efforts to increase private support from individuals, foundations, and corporations, working collaboratively with the UVM Foundation.
Enhance DiversityThe Dean will develop targeted outreach and recruitment efforts to attract a more diverse pool of graduate applicants. This will involve working with organizations that support underrepresented groups in academia, providing support and resources for underrepresented groups once they are enrolled, offering mentorship programs, providing access to funding and professional development opportunities, implementing policies and initiatives that promote inclusivity and diversity in collaboration with the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and developing training programs for faculty and staff who work with graduate students from diverse communities.
Advance Effective CommunicationThe Dean will continue efforts to invigorate the cohesiveness and health of our graduate and postdoctoral communities by tailoring their research accomplishments to the University’s communication outlets. This will include (1) recognizing their accomplishment through nominations for external awards; (2) sharing news about their publications, grants, and other achievements, and the impact on the university and broader community; (3) featuring graduate students and postdoctoral associates in public events such as symposia, conferences, and public lectures, and (4) working with university leadership to advocate for policies and initiatives that support graduate student and postdoctoral funding.

The University of Vermont: Its Founding and HistoryAn institution like no other
. Chartered in 1791 as the fifth college in New England, the University of Vermont rapidly claimed a respected place among progressive thinkers and doers in the rugged, vibrant, and spectacular place that became the State of Vermont that same year. The university has evolved significantly and continuously for over 230 years to become a premier public research university.
In harmony with our early roots as a champion of the liberal arts, the institution is chartered with a Latin name, Universitas Viridis Montis
(University of the Green Mountains) abbreviated to the familiar “UVM” used to this day. Anchored in scholarly tradition yet helping to define a new state’s and nation’s future, UVM established a reputation “like no other” from the beginning.
The charter explicitly supported freedom of religion, breaking ranks with institutions like Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and Brown to become the first institution of higher learning to publicly declare a secular stance. In 1838, Andrew Harris became the first African American graduate. In 1871, UVM defied custom yet again by admitting two women students. UVM’s chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society was the first to admit women (1875) and African Americans (1877).New approaches, age-old values.
UVM played a major role in the social, intellectual, and economic development of the region during the late 18th and throughout the 19th century—realizing the vision of founder Ira Allen. In 1822, a medical college was formally created—the sixth in the nation. A generation later, following passage of the Morrill Land Grant Act, Vermont’s legislature built a new State Agricultural College at UVM. One year later, in 1865, the two institutions merged, and the state committed annual support to the new enterprise for the first time.
In the mid-20th century, state and UVM leaders collaborated to designate UVM a public university that would forever serve as Vermont’s flagship offering discounted tuition to state residents. to ensure Vermonters from families below the state’s median household income pay zero tuition.
