Position Summary:

The Department of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Education (EMSE) at the University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Science Education with a focus on learning analytics and machine learning to begin August 2023. The position is a tenure-track, academic year appointment based at the Athens campus, with the possibility of summer employment.

This position is part of the 2021 Presidential Interdisciplinary Faculty Hiring Initiative in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. This hiring initiative is aimed at attracting leading scholars in the fields of data science and artificial intelligence. UGA will be recruiting 70 faculty members to teach and advance research through this initiative. Twenty these positions will be in two interdisciplinary areas: computational social sciences; and data science, AI, and virtual reality in teaching and learning. The EMSE position is in this subset.

The successful candidate will be housed in EMSE, and will be part of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to Advance Teaching & Learning Cluster, a group of six tenure-track faculty hired in the Mary Frances Early College of Education (MFE COE) and the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences. Scholarship conducted by cluster faculty has the potential to enhance assessment and active learning in classrooms; illuminate previously unseen inequities in classrooms and educational systems; transform educational data into new insights that benefit students, teachers, and administrators; and improve data science education in K12 and higher education. This cluster will strengthen and expand UGA’s position as a national leader in discipline-based education research and build on existing core strengths in data science and artificial intelligence for teaching and learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain a scholarly research, publication, and grant writing record.
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in science education and/or data science research methods classes.
  • Advise graduate students and supervise graduate student research.

  • Provide service to the department, college, university, profession, and public.

Additional Requirements:

  • Training and skills in applying learning analytics and machine learning in science education research.
  • Capability to teach on-site in our undergraduate and graduate programs in our elementary, middle grades, and/or secondary science teacher education programs.

  • One or more years of experience teaching data science-related courses at the college level.
  • One or more years of experience working with diverse student populations.
  • One or more years of experience teaching in K-12 settings.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

  • Expertise developed in one or more of these areas: learning analytics, machine learning, adaptive learning, adaptive testing, log file data analysis, etc.
