Departmental Overview

How do you define a quality life? Recreational Sports helps each individual pursue that answer by providing a wide variety of fitness and wellness programs. Supporting this larger mission requires a focus on daily activities, consistent values, and the continual pursuit of a long-term vision. The Department of Recreational Sports offers members of the UC Berkeley community an extraordinary experience to live active and meaningful lives while on campus.

Programs and services range from group fitness, aquatics, adventure trips, drop-in fitness and recreation, intramural sports, sport clubs, personal training, WorkFit, and many other activities. Recreational Sports is enhanced by its indoor and outdoor facilities, including three indoor locations, four pools, five tennis courts, and an outdoor adventure center at the Berkeley Marina.

Responsibilities
    Plans, organizes, and implements in-person and virtual recreational programs (Intramurals, Esports, and other adult sports programs), Supervises employee performance, career development, and adherence to job standards. Provides primary supervision of student staff and interns. Selects, trains, develops, and supervises student staff and interns. Reviews and approves student employee payroll. Submit requests for use of recreational facilities. Oversee inventory, storage, budget, and maintenance of sports and recreational equipment. Maintains files, records, and prepares reports as necessary. Monitors budget and makes budget recommendations to manager for assigned activities/programs. Designs, revises, and implements program policies and procedures including identifying and managing programming safety risks, making risk-avoidance adjustments to current operations, and preparing and implementing action plans to decrease risk factors. Assists with appropriate public relations and promotional programs and works to develop partnerships with community partners and volunteers focused on Esports and IM Sports programs. Esports community center management.

Required Qualifications
    Has knowledge of program activity and industry best practices. Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally. Strong service orientation, program management, sound judgment, and decision-making, critical thinking, developing original ideas, and creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment. Must be able to work effectively, across all organization levels, internally and externally. Client service-minded, entrepreneurial spirit, and creative thinking. Must have demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Must be proficient in the use of basic computer applications. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn about campus policies and procedures. Experience administering in-person and virtual sports programming for individuals of varying abilities. Interpersonal skills to interact effectively in person and virtually with people from diverse backgrounds.

Education/Training:
    Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Training:
    Master's Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Minimum two years experience administering recreational Intramural Sports and Esports at the collegiate level. Working knowledge of recreation management software such as IM Leagues and Fusion Innosoft.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $47,800.00 - $62,000.00.
    This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits. This position is exempt and paid monthly.
