Position Summary:

This position is for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Epidemiology CHERISH (Church-based Health Intervention to Eliminate Racial Inequalities in Cardiovascular Health) Clinical Study.  This position will hold the rank of Instructor through the Department of Medicine, Section of Cardiology at Tulane University School of Medicine.  This NP will practice in collaboration with a licensed physician pursuant to a collaborative practice agreement.  The NP will be responsible for clinical management for an assigned patient population and will enhance the quality of care through education and advanced nursing knowledge.  The NP must collaborate effectively with the interdisciplinary care teams, act as a liaison between medical teams and researchers and perform other duties as assigned.

As a member of the research team, the NP will conduct initial and follow-up assessments with study participants. The NP will also provide clinical services, including medication management, to study participants at the community settings.

Working Environment:

This position will generally function within local churches in the Greater New Orleans area. The NP will regularly interact with study participants and their families, church leadership and wellness coordinators, as well as other health care and research team members. This position requires frequent travel to local churches within the Greater New Orleans area. The NP will have an office at Tulane University School of Medicine.

Job Duties

Clinical Management and Assessment – Approximately 55% of Job

The nurse practitioner will

  • practice in collaboration with a licensed physician pursuant to a collaborative practice agreement.
  • be responsible for clinical management for an assigned patient population and will enhance the quality of care through education and advanced nursing knowledge.
  • collaborate effectively with the interdisciplinary care teams, act as liaison between medical teams and researchers.
  • conduct initial and follow up assessments with study participants and provide clinical services including medication management to study participants at the community settings.

Research Study Implementation – Approximately 30% of Job

The nurse practitioner will

  • participate in training to learn to coordinate clinical trials and clinical research protocol implementation.
  • participate in site visits with study coordinators, physicians, study sponsor and Tulane Center for Clinical Research personnel.
  • learn to develop source documents and maintain study files on patients.
  • assists with maintaining clinical supplies and equipment.
  • observe and assist with clinical protocol studies to include screening, recruitment, and enrollment of trial subjects.
  • observe and participate in correspondence with other departments in the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the Tulane University School of Medicine, hospitals and clinics to ensure protocols are routed properly and to obtain data for record keeping purposes.
  • assist in coordinating protocol-related research procedures, intervention activities, and follow-up care.
  • assist with data entry and quality control.
  • keep the principal investigator abreast of patient status and any untoward events.
  • assist in the reporting of adverse events and notify investigators of alert issues.
  • comply with institutional policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines.
  • assists in preparing regular reports on recruitment, retention, and study related issues.
  • comply with federal, state, and sponsor policies.
  • assist in the preparation of regulatory documents as assigned.

Patient Recruitment Activities for the Research Team – Approximately 10% of job

The nurse practitioner will participate in recruitment efforts which may include

  • communicating with providers and data managers at hospitals, clinics, and other institutions.
  • managing lists of potential participants.
  • assisting with mailings, phone calls, pre-screenings, and scheduling.
  • maintaining recruitment and retention goals.
  • attending health fairs.
  • Participating in patient teaching activities.
  • other forms of recruitment that may become available.

Other Duties – Approximately 5% of job

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse who has completed an accredited University Graduate Nursing Program for Advanced Practice Nursing with the Louisiana Board Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, or Adult Nurse Practitioner. 
  • Current license to practice as an APRN is required from the Louisiana State Board of Nursing by date of hire.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies:

  • Ability to protect confidentiality and meet all ethical standards.
  • Strong assessment and treatment skills, including the ability to work clinically with a diversity of clients.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively utilize an electronic medical record system.
  • Ability to collaborate collegially with different health care teams.
  • Ability to engage in ongoing education on clinical guidelines and standards.
  • Ability to travel to community settings to provide chronic disease management.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Formal training and/or experience as specialized cardiac nurse practitioner
  • Experience with ongoing clinical management of cardiovascular health risk.
  • Board certification as a Nurse Practitioner as regulated by the LSBN
  • Clinical Trial experience
  • Competency documenting services using an electronic medical record system
